1. Creators Need Tools to Customize Ad Content

   Creators need tools that customize ad content to improve the ad viewing experience on the platform. It is a serious flaw in the system that creators do not have any input on what ad content is shown to their viewers.

   To share what prompted this idea, the other night a viewer informed me that they had been shown an ad for Hogwarts Legacy. This was very upsetting, because my stream has become a haven for marginalized folks on the platform (I myself am a triple minority). The promotion of JK Rowling's media on my stream was very upsetting to my entire community, as she is an outspoken bigot who profits off of marginalizing others.

   To be clear, my complaint is not about the existence of the Hogwarts Legacy ad. I understand that Twitch profits from running ads on our streams; this was merely one of many ads being shown on the platform. My problems with what happened are the following:

   1) The ad was harmful. It actively marginalized folks in my community.
   2) The ad made the viewing experience on Twitch far less entertaining for my community.
   3) The ad was completely ineffective. No one in my stream supports or condones the product being promoted.

   Creators have zero tools available that address the problems I outlined above. We need a tool in our dashboard that allows us to set preferences for the types of ads that would interest our audiences: we need to be able to customize ad content for our viewership.

   Let's take another example. Let's say that a streamer knows that they have a disproportionate number of vegetarian or vegan viewers. As of now, creators cannot give the algorithm feedback on their viewers' interests. At some point, these viewers would be shown ads that promote burgers and other meat. Such an ad would not only be a turn off for most of those viewers, but also the ad would be ineffectual in advertising its product.

   Broadly speaking, viewers want to see ads for products that interest them, while advertisers want their ads to be effective. Without any tool for creators to customize ad content, ads only have a random chance of intriguing viewers.

   If we had tools to customize ad content, it would not only improve the ad experience for the viewer, but also would help advertisements reach target audiences. More effective advertising would make the prospect of ads more appealing to advertisers, generating more revenue for Twitch and creators.

   I hope that this suggestion can lead towards improving entertainment on Twitch.

2. Banned and Blocked users only see ads

   If you have blocked or banned someone from your channel, when they come to your channel they no longer can watch the stream. They see nothing but an endless ad roll. They click on a VOD? You can watch it, after these ads. But then the ads never end.

   Not to effect timedout users.

3. Give viewers the option of when to view ads

   To prevent viewers being in a situation where they miss live stream content, give users an option to "View ads now instead of on the regular timer schedule", which would then reset the timer. Yes you have to view more ads, but you then are guaranteed ad-free content for the next X amount of time (whatever the current timer is set at for running ads).

   i.e. Watching a speedrun, on PB pace, 20 minutes left in the stream, but there's an ad in 15 min. I really don't want to miss the end! I'll just play an ad now, deal with it, and then I'll have guaranteed ad-free viewing the rest of this PB run!

   Putting this in the hands of viewers empowers them to have control over the ad experience and then they won't miss the great live content moments they know are coming!

4. Use machine learning to create smart ads

   I would love it if you used machine learning to know when streamers are idle* in certain games, to trigger an ad.

   games like - fortnite, cod, apex legends, valorant, dead by daylight all have waiting rooms/lobbies, so if you detect that a streamer is in a lobby, you can trigger the ad using machine learning, so that another ad wont play for 20 minutes or so the average time the game plays ( i know different games have different common load times.

   this i think would be one of the easiest and smartest ways to introduce more people to use ads, without missing core game content, and also understand that not every game has lobbies,
   tho some of these games also have api access to make this process even easier.

5. Display to chat when ad is run, including a timer

   I'd like to have a setting that allows us to display "how many seconds later the ad will run" for an ad that's being streamed.

   If the ad plays the moment I send a chat, it makes it very difficult for me to hear what the streamer has to say to me in real time.

   Also, if you could turn that setting on by default on Twitch, it would make it easier for viewers to know when to send a chat, and would allow for smooth communication.

6. Rework the Ad Incentive Program

   Currently, the Ad Incentive Program presents you three offers every month. It's on a take it or leave it basis. I find there is a big issue with this though. The amount of money you are offered is fine. The amount of hours you are required to stream for a month is fine. The thing that doesn't make sense is the amount of minutes of ads per hour you are required to run.

   I have received offers in two months now where the lowest ads per hour requirement was 4 minutes, and I have even seen some people with their lowest being 7 minutes. This creates two problems. Some people may be willing to run ads, but they aren't willing to run THAT MANY ads. It seems counterintuitive to require them to run too many ads per hour, such that they just decide to decline it and run no ads that month.

   The second issue is the longest time an ad break can be ran for is 3 minutes. It works really well to just take a break from the stream once per hour while the ads are playing, so that no one misses any of the content from the stream. When the minimum ad incentive offer is over 3 minutes of ads per hour, it is impossible to just take a single ad break per hour. For example, with 4 minutes per hour, I am required to take two 2 minute ad breaks every hour. It just doesn't feel right to take a break from the stream every half hour, so I end up having ads playing while I am presenting content.

   I think a better way for this program to work is as follows. When you receive your Ad Incentive Program offer, it will give you the hours required to stream that month, along with a price per (minute per hour) of ads. Then you can choose how many minutes of ads per hour you wish to run that month. For example, it may say stream for 100 hours at a rate of $100 per (minute per hour) of ads. So I can choose to run 3 minutes of ads per hour to earn $300 in that month, or only run 1 minute of ads per hour to earn $100 that month. Or I could even choose to run 10 minutes of ads per hour to earn $1000 that month.

   I do think the Ad Incentive Program has been helpful for earning more revenue as a streamer, but it's still not ideal. This change would at least give a bit more control to creators as to how they run their stream.

9. Watch ad-free with bits

   I don't Twitch a lot, maybe once a week on a weekend when I want to relax, and when I do, the last thing I want is to be bombarded by advertisements. Currently the only options for an ad-free experience is to commit and subscribe, either to the channel you're watching, with Turbo, or with Twitch Prime. If you're not using Twitch that much it's a big waste of money, and it seems like the whole business idea is to make people forget where their money is going.

   My consumption of Twitch is similar to watching a movie. I want to pay for the movie, not for an entire library of movies I don't care about at that particular moment, and I certainly don't want to commit to a subscription. I'm thinking a solution to this could be like a taximeter kinda thing that would be integrated with Bits, where you tick a box that lets you watch ad-free while gradually taking away Bits every minute. Once you run out of bits or uncheck the box, the ads would start running again.

11. Warning of suicide ad

    I just encountered an ad that features a teenager committing suicide and his father frantically trying to get into his room to save him. I understand that this ad is for awareness but I know multiple people including myself who have lost people to suicide and my cousin shot himself as his family was walking in. With no disclaimer, it completely derailed the stream and took me by surprise. I would like to advocate for a disclaimer feature for ads that viewers might find disturbing. Such as gore, suicide and self harm topics, etc. I can't have been the only one affected by this ad. Any response would be greatly appreciated

12. Have a button that allows the viewer to execute the ad break.

    Ads are a serious issue. Especially when watching a stream and an ad hits at a crucial moment. To correct this, allow the viewer to choose when the ad hits. Maybe there's a break in the action or maybe the viewer needs to go to the bathroom. Have a button that allows the viewer to execute the ad break. Then allow the stream to go for 30-60 minutes. If they don't execute, then the ad runs on the timer as usual. This way, not only will the viewer be more incline to watch the stream, but they will be more incline to execute ads. I know banking ads is not a great idea because it'll be abused. This really can't be and gives more power to the viewer.

13. Pause stream when ads rolls, and run at increase speed until you catch up.

    Add the option to instead of just cutting away the part of the stream that continue to run even when an ad interrupts it, the stream is paused at the same moment the ads start. Then when the ad ends, you continue where you left off, but the VOD is speed up by an amount you select, e.g. x2 until you catch up to the live stream, at which point you go back to the live stream.

    Another option that would be nice if some full screen ads with audio was traded for silent banner ads, and that you get like one "skip token" for every ~5h you spend watching twitch. The token allow you to skip the full screen ads and trade it for a banner ad that displays for much longer, so that you do not have to miss some really important moment in a stream where you also do not want to be in sync with the chat.

14. Show total ad time left instead of or in addition to the number of ads left.

    When a streamer runs a block of ads, we select the amount of time we want the ads to run for, and that can be anywhere from 30 seconds to 3 minutes. However when we do that, all the viewer sees is the number of ads left, not the total time left. Since ads vary in length, that doesn't actually tell them how long until they're over.

    Speaking for myself, it's pretty much a daily occurance to have someone post a message like "8 ads??" in my chat. And sometimes that number can be in the double digits. If viewers were either instead or in addition shown the total time left, like we select as the streamer, I think it'd reduce the shock of how many ads are coming, which should make for a better viewer experience.

    Also kind of a side point, but if ad inventory is a problem, you could just display "Up to x:xx of ads left." I don't think anyone is going to complain about the timer being cut short.

15. Reduce the greed on Ads

    I formulated the title drastically because it‘s a serious problem lately happening on Twitch and don’t see that getting addressed from them, at least not in the level as it should.

    I said it several times on social media and i also say it here: Twitch is ruining their ads business, constantly and -seems like- willingly:
    - The sheer amount of ads which you face as a viewer of the platform is simply ridiculous
    - You‘ve guys taken the control of the ads out of the hands of the content creators
    - You implement changes to the ad system without notifying anybody nor testing it out
    - the Ads for bits function is not working

    So, let me explain that points one by one:
    — Amount of Ads —
    If i enter a stream (the so called „pre-roll ads“) the player tells me:
    - „Ad 1 of 2“, then ofc „Ad 2 of 2“ and then it starts over again, 8 times in a row.
    - Which makes by
    - - an average ad length of 10 seconds (lowest value in Twitch advantage and easier to calculate here),
    - - 20 seconds per „block“
    - - which makes it 160 Seconds or over 2,5 Minutes i watch ads.
    I really have to ask you Twitch: Are you guys kidding us?

    Not is that just annoying, which leads me (and many others i spoke with) to leave the site. Which means the tab will be closed. And your mid-roll ads have the same issue.

    — No Control for Content Creators —
    Yeah when we are at the mid-roll ads let‘s come to a good point. You guys implement the mid-roll ads without any control for the content creators.

    Okay, the streamers can trigger ads to push the mid-rolls out, but that‘s not the control i‘m talking about. It‘s about the content won‘t be interrupted suddenly by an ads in the worse timing, well how could we prevent that? OH by giving the streamers the fully control about the ad placement for example.

    You guys know that streamers suffer from your „fantastic test“ right? They loosing viewers which leave the channel because of the mid-roll ads, they try to come back but the ads keep playing and playing and they won‘t come back. Many Streamers i spoke with recommended their viewers to install adblockers to keep them in the channel! If that is not an indicator to you Twitch that something is completely wrong with your ads then i recommend to not be ad based anymore.

    — Implementation Failures and Bugs —
    We, as Twitch Viewers, are already used to bugs all over the place: Emotes and Badges don‘t load, Whisper Function does often not working.

    But the implementation of the mid-roll ads, takes failure to a whole new level! Not that nobody was informed, not partnered streamers, affiliates, normal streamers or viewers. The mid-rolls have also been served to subscribers of channels which is a complete no-go. Obviously nobody tested that before implementing it into production or the test methods are not working at all.

    — Ads for Bits Function —
    Okay, let‘s leave that all to the side and imagine: We want to watch ads and get something for it, like bits. Welp that‘s also not working.

    For months i can‘t use the „ads for bits“ function, at all. Strange when i see that you guys can serve the ads over 2 minutes, but if i want bits to watch ads there are suddenly no ads?!? Why don‘t you use the amazon ads here, why i don‘t see the other ads here? The only time a user would get a literal benefit from watch the ads you block the function? I have to repeat myself: Are you guys kidding me?

    I wish Twitch would think more about the user and the content creators and simply not backstabbing on both of them by spamming the user with ads and barely severing and of the revenue to the streamer

16. Retargetable ads

    I've noticed that some of the on-screen advertisements located at the bottom mid section while I'm actively watching a stream are targeted towards amazon and other adverts with a purchase link available.

    I believe that adding user options to "shopping" adverts that can tailor the on-screen ads would make them feel less invasive since I'm not going to argue them being there. I don't have a stance strong enough to make that point valid.

    My suggestion, Add a section on the ad that invites users to change settings and add keywords to filter the advertisements provided to them to a certain degree or fully if the range of their keywords extend available advertisements.

    Some of the settings can be checkboxes allowing users options to opt out of certain categories possibly, prioritize their keywords , ignore their keywords,

    In the end I know advertisements are inevitable and I'm not going to debate them. I believe if the user can tailor the advertisements available to them it would provide otherwise unwarranted feedback. The overall user may be less aggressive towards such invasive advertisements if they felt like they had some control over the matter.

    The last point I want to make because it to me would make a huge impact on the amount of time spent on the platform in general... I personally wouldn't mind more advertisements if there was a popup on the actual stream similar to some of the on-screen features. The stream can be muted to a low audio or muted for the duration. I wouldn't feel like they are as invasive and I would simply look at the ad and stream in the end spending more time watching streams and ads. To anyone who took the time to read on, Appreciate you and it's merely and rough idea to play with.

    I've noticed that some of the on-screen advertisements located at the bottom mid section while I'm actively watching a stream are targeted towards amazon and other adverts with a purchase link available.

    I believe that adding user options to "shopping" adverts that can tailor the on-screen ads would make them feel less invasive since I'm not going to argue them being there. I don't have a stance strong enough to make that point valid.

17. Allow option to prevent inappropriate ads for underage children

    Can there be a setting options to remove certain type ads. I have children (who are 5 and 9) watching streams with me and these ads are not appropriate. It seems really aiming at sex-related themes (which I would associate and avoid kick.com for). I always assumed twitch is more family-friendly unlike kick.

    Examples of current Amazon related ads which are inappropriate:

18. Add a option to post in chat ads are live (helps single monitor people & viewers)

    Please let us see when ads are starting, without having to have the creator dashboard open, such as posting in chat as a bot when ads are live.

    Would be nice if there was a way for Twitch to post when ads are starting in the chat, so that people who stream with a single monitor, (which is a lot of people still) would be able to see when ads are starting and ending.
    Plus viewers could see this too.

    I have streamed for well over 3 years now, and due to disability and poverty, I can't afford anything, let alone another monitor, so I have to use overlays and rely on things informing me, something Twitch doesn't so.

19. Show if someone who is chatting is in an ad or not

    Give us some sort of visual feedback if a message someone put was put while the are in an ad or not, I've posted something in chat so many times just as a ad has hit only to not hear a response so I sure its happened the other way around too, This would let us easily see who is watching an ad while chatting so we could delay our response to the point where they can hear it again.

20. Connect chat with the ads

    Tie ads in with the chat so that if someone blocks ads they also have to block chat and would not be able to participate in the community unless adblockers are disabled on twitch.
