  1. Simple as. While they should adhere to guidelines, users should be able to opt for which box art they prefer on IGDB. Doing so would not only be preferable for some who prefer some art over another, but would also fleshen out the Database by letting users see which artwork corresponds to which region.

    Heya!

There’s absolutely a need for multiple covers as a data point, we hear you :) Let’s clarify what this could mean in the near future:

One thing that we are currently looking at is expanding data for Localization, and covers are an obvious fit for this. However it’s worth pointing that Localized cover and additional cover might not mean the same thing. For example offering the Japanese specific cover doesn’t mean having multiple variant for it (different artworks, logo style, dimensions etc..).

We will start with Localization, which will help provide API users more options for their own communities. And as a second step from there we would begin looking at how to offer multiple variant of a single regional cover so that users may pick & choose.

    Hope this helps!

  2. TL;DR: Some way to differentiate canonical franchise entries from noncanonical ones would be awesome.

First off, I love that IGDB accepts and maintains data about ROM hacks, fan games, and other "unofficial" titles. It really helps the platform's position and usability as a database for all games of all kinds.

That being said, when looking through the search results for a franchise like Pokemon, there are an incredible number of these unofficial games mixed into the results, many of which are built off of the existing, official games. There's nothing (as far as I can tell, anyway) in the metadata…

  3. Besides the confusion with genres and themes (and things being really blanket), it would be great if people upvote or downvote genres to video games instead of how it is currently, where users can add whatever genres/tags they want with moderation, which leads to Steam/IGDB tags that don't really help for having users find similar games.

  4. It would be good to have some preset options for screenshot descriptions, like Alternative Names have (and still maintain the possibility of adding a custom description).

The main suggestions I have are:

    • Title screen (I use this one all the time)
    • In-game screenshot
    • Main menu
    • Opening screenshot

  5. I was trying to add credits for a game I developed myself, but we have no youtube video showing the credits. I think there should be another method of verification for entered credits e.g. websites or some kind of verification of the credibility of the editor.

    Heya!

Our end credits is one of the oldest feature we have on the site and indeed could use some additional improvements.
Unfortunately this isn’t currently planned to revisit it in the short term.

We do however intend to explore ways to differentiate game developers from regular users which could also help such use cases.

    Thanks!

  6. Adding filter options to lists would be great. For example, if I want to filter a list to check only a specific genre, series or franchise, for example.

  7. As it stands, there is a lot of confusion and mixed up data between Collections and Franchises, all relating to the series in which a game belongs. Some games will be within a collection without a franchise, while other series titles such as "Legend of Zelda" has 2 different database ID's for its collection and its franchise.

Because of these differences, it's hard to utilise the series distinction in searches, as it might be in one category or the other, or both. If both are merged, there would be a more consistent way of determining a "series", with many games…

  8. Just a button on IGDB to go to a random game in the database. Maybe you can set a date frame or different filters to it but in general a button to show a random game would be awesome.

    Hey!

This is a good suggestion thank you! This has been discussed a couple of times in the past. We can’t promise any ETA on such a feature but it would be interesting to investigate.

Our main concerns so far would be what can be included is random: should it have filters, should it be games on all platforms or only selected ones, all age ratings etc..

If you have more ideas or specifics that always helps, we’ll leave this ticket open meanwhile!
    Thank you!

  9. I wasn't sure what to use for this and I think that's the point. Puzzle titles like Tetris, Pong, Breakout, and the like are very hard to define in terms of a Theme based on the choices available.

An Abstract Theme might be the best case in these situations.

  11. Hi,
when I check my own channel on Twitch, I like to see the colouredful section name something like "Recently broadcast categories" (in Italian "Categorie trasmesse di recente), with all Game Covers from recently streamed games/categories.

Anyway, seeing I bring lot of indie (expecially less less known ones) I often find they have no Game Cover at all related to their category. And they show and ugly grey empty cover box.

But most of them actually can show a Game Cover on IGDB... or if they don't, well I often upload a cover by myself, if I can.

    The fact…

    Hey!
Thanks for reaching out. This has been an ongoing request, and an obvious fit for IGDB and Twitch.

A separate team within Twitch has this planned. We (IGDB) do have covers as a high data priority and are indeed ready to power Twitch with those covers :)

Stay tuned for future Twitch announcements :)

  12. Games' ratings may be skewed or conflicting if they have wildly different ports.

For example, "The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning" has its console ports, which are fundamentally the same, but it also has a 2D side-scroller port for GBA, and an isometric port for DS; both vary greatly (especially the GBA port) from the console release. Another example is Shrek 2, where the PC port is effectively an entirely different game from the console ports (and the matching PC port was called "Shrek 2: Team Action!")

Metacritic already separates game ratings by every port, and imo that's how…

    Hey there!

You are 100% correct on this :) We would consider the GBA, DS, and DS releases as Ports in the sense they deserve their own pages on IGDB so they can be rated & reviewed individually.

This is indeed a perfect example for ports. In this case it’s simply that we haven’t got around to split the releases and clean up the data.

Thanks for pointing it out, we’ll get right on it!

Dropping the link to our guidelines Ports just in case as well: https://github.com/twitchtv/igdb-contribution-guidelines/wiki/Game-Types

  13. In lists, I see that you can export those lists into csv files. However, when I go to view them, they don't have the user's personal rating, which I feel like is an important data point if someone wants to see their lists.

Essentially, this request is for a new column alongside the average user rating called "Personal Rating".

If no personal rating exists, it can either be 0 or empty.

Thank you for all your hard work!

  14. Several games have interesting or obscure caveats in terms of their release or their playability, and it's worth mentioning them for the sake of completeness. For example, Donkey Kong Junior is listed as a Gameboy Advance release, which is technically correct, but it was only playable via the e-Reader, which is not obvious. Additionally, Donkey Kong Junior also exists as a playable game within Game and Watch Gallery 3 and 4, which may technically not count as a release but deserves mentioning somewhere. There are several examples of games with unique scenarios like this, and this data doesn't really have…

Hey! This is excellent, we ourselves have been wanting Triva data for a long time. Although this isn’t a high priority data it would offer a lot in terms of general knowledge.

However this is a difficult data to handle, as verifying it can be quite difficult and time consuming. Eventually we will revisit the concept and see what options we can come up with to faciliate this.

Leaving this ticket open if other users have suggestions, such as sources of gaming trivia that could be researched.

    Thanks!

  15. I'd like a way to link releases and publishers. For instance, a game might have been published by Midway in North America and Taito in Japan. Right now there's no way to distinguish such information, and both appear as publishers with no additional information. Also, a game might have been published by different companies at different times on the same platform - this would also be helpful to be able to differentiate.

  16. Have the ability to add links to the Internet Archive where older games can be streamed legally.

  17. Very happy to see Delisted added to the Status options. If possible, it would be nice to also allow for documenting the date in which a title was removed from online storefronts, similar to how Offline Status allows users to document the date online functionality was shut down.

However, even when documented, Offline Status's Date does not currently show on the standard entry page, so this probably is a double request in that case.

Hey! Thanks for the suggestion, there’s some good opportunity there indeed.

We have plans (and needs) to redo how we handle companies, but we also need to rethink how Follows are handled. Right now even follows on game page are underused in terms of potential.

Definitely to be put in consideration when we revisit Companies. Thanks!

    Hey there!

Could you clarity what do you mean by data in this case, is it to do with the lists and ratings in particular?

Curious to learn more about such a use case, is there a particular need to re-upload the exported CSV or Excel document rather than use the website?

    Thanks!
