Please DON'T implement the Highlight storage limit!
Please do not go ahead with the Highlight storage limit. (https://x.com/TwitchSupport/status/1892277199497043994?t=WHF3xmUvvGdAMyI6CGdgoQ&s=19)
Dungeons and Dragons channels and other tabletop creators use Highlights to tell a story, while removing BRB breaks and other non-essential moments. These Highlights are pivotal to their lore and story! These streams are usually 4+ hours long with multiple seasons, adding up to 100+ extremely quickly.
Speed runners use Highlights to show off their best runs, and often have many over multiple years. Theres historic channels that are no longer active, where people can watch past content and reminisce on a time they may have missed.
Twitch Partners (like me), who spent so much time and energy getting to where they are. Enjoy having their journey avaiable for people to watch. For new community members, but also for potential gigs and sponsorships. Our Highlights are often tailored as a "CV", showing our past moments. All on the platform we stream on! Cherring picking these to just 100 hours is impossible.
Highlights may not be used by many, and most may not go over that 0.5%. However, the ones who do count on those Highlights and care about them deeply.
Please consider haulting this change, or at the very least exempting Partners and/or accounrs that haven't been active for some time. Some Creators are no longer with us, their accounts a testament to their time on Twitch and their lives, with no one available to log in and choose what is purged.
Please don't take away our history, or make it a panic for us to move everyrthing. There's no mass highlight removal/export function.

Horrendous decision, wiping away many creators content, that have been on your platform for nearly a decade and have accumilated 1000+ hours of streams, clips and highlights is awful. Did you even think about creators that have passed away, long DnD sessions and thousands of speedruns and long gameplay? This limit would destroy so much history. Also, giving such little time for said creators to download terabytes worth of data is so stupid. Please rethink this!

How the **** are you going to implement this change and not even give us tools to mass download or export the videos?

This looks rushed and half-assed, more so like a scare tactic than a productive attempt to level with your steamers about your seeming inability to fund the servers it takes to store current highlights

A horrid decision with no thought put into it. If you hurt your user's experience just because of rising costs, then you hurt your bottom-line and this hurts everyone including the platform itself.

This post equally as much misses the point behind the abuse that the highlight system sees as much as the twitch team. Why does an account that has been streaming 6 hours a day for 5 years have the same hour limit as an account that does not have 100 hours in total content? A system where even as little as a percent of someones stream are allowed to be highlighted would be infinitely better than a system that requires the streamer to purge their history once their history becomes too in depth. The current system punishes correct use of the highlight feature for people who have shown their most support to twitch and needs to be reevaluated before it goes in effect. When speedrunners whose highlights are basically exclusively their biggest accomplishments in their career have to fear loosing their history to an arbitrary limit then there is something wrong.

Please listen to creators on these. The fact that VODs and Highlights barely even get watched, is cause discoverability on Twitch is terrible.
Most streamers aren't tech savvy enough to save content for themselves, let alone take it off your platform to save onto another one.
Now they have to go looking for third party tools to do all this. All this does is hurt communities wanting to keep up to date with their favorite creators. Twitch should be trying their hardest to be the one-stop shop for watching content creators, not drive them all over the internet away from Twitch.

This will be detrimental to your business model, and only drive more viewing traffic and creators to YouTube, your direct competitor. The decision is gutting the years worth of work and experiences creators have with their community and not everyone will have the time or means to relocate or select what they’d like to keep.
Imagine each of these as bricks of your home. Suddenly someone comes in with a wrecking ball, knocks most of them out and you’re just left with a partial wall.
Stop making decisions that destroy the communities on your platform and ******* off the people responsible for making you money. Creators are customers just as much as they’re contracted employees.

Please don't do this! I already lost so much content due to past broadcasts only lasting a certain amount of days and the DMCA stuff. Now this??? I would have to spend hours trying to export all the content I have over the years. I don't have time for that. I have enough to worry about let alone this. The timeframe also only April??? It just doesn't make any sense to me. You want us only to have 100 hours of highlights on your website? Do you want more traction to go to other sites? For instance I just got done with my KCD2 run which was 90 hours! So what one game of highlights on twitch? Want us to nicpick our content in highlights. Whats next limited clips? Cause that could very well be the next thing. **** make 30secs of clips out of my 90 hour run. This is just so upsetting and I'm just mad.

I do not believe enforcing a limit on Highlights/Vods is wise. This not only causes users to move their content away from their primary source to another, but it also restricts many different creators whose entire channel identity comprises highlights, vods, etc.
Think about D&D channels or channels that play primarily RPG games. A single play-through can easily encompass 100+ hours. This anti-consumer limit should have been discussed with the community before deciding to roll it out.
Let the community understand why these decisions are even considered before making them. Don't just drop it as a "feature change" with no chance for the community and creators to discuss it with you first.

Please don't implement this change without at least giving us a reasonable amount of time (two months is not enough for people with thousands of hours worth of highlights, especially if we don't have appropriate storage space to download) and giving us an appropriate tool to manage our highlights.
Also, 100 hours is NOT enough storage space. That barely encompasses even one full playthrough of a game in many cases. This change makes it so that highlights are basically useless for the vast majority of streamers, and with VOD storage being so time limited, it's difficult to see what the end goal is here. Doing this encourages your creators to seek out competitor platforms and make them a bigger part of their content strategy. It really feels like you will be potentially chasing creators away in the long run.

This will also severely impact podcasts, developers, educational channels, science channels, news & discussions, interviews... anyone creating content that can be several hours long as a block and not just "moments" within an X hour stream... for a company that has been trying to be "more" than just gaming livestreams and has made various moves to compete with likes of Youtube etc, this is a very poor decision alienating every type of content creator aforementioned, as well as many others mentioned in this thread.

Your metrics say that a tiny so-and-so percent of active users are using highlights, but in the grand scheme of Twitch metrics, that is still likely thousands, if not tens of thousands, of active users who appreciated the ability to have another avenue with which to preserve and curate their past content for users to enjoy long past the livestream date.
This sudden kneejerk & sweeping move is a detriment not only to those who dedicated the use of the highlight system for this purpose, but for every user of the website: creator, viewer or otherwise. It is disastrous for streamers who have built their content and identity over serialised and regular show formats, and for average users who simply wish to either keep a record of their stream journeys irrespective of how long or how often it goes on for.
The deadlines with which you plan to implement this are also far too punitive on users who are not carrying enough metrics to manage their Twitch presences full-time - that is definitely a much larger percentage of the userbase. These average persons lead lives with other full-time work, child rearing, commuting - all of which is time they cannot be at their desktops to manage or transfer their large quantities of content to other places before it gets arbitrarily removed forever.
All in all, this is a shockingly inept and awful announcement to make and it is sending a number of users, myself included, into a state of anxiety and worry over this. It is a poor oversight of the decision makers to not realise that users have used the highlight and upload features in such a way for years, and then affront them with this sudden and ill-advised proposal.
Please rethink it. Don't roll this out.

This uservoice forum is so horribly organized that I didn't even find this entry to upvote initially, but I voiced my concerns on the other one I found. Besides historical erasure & lack of support for creators looking to mass export, exporting VODs to other video platforms will erase linked chat history alongside it, fundamentally making what remains incomplete.

Additionally some streamers aren't around anymore, in some cases this is because they have died. So deleting their videos feels extremely wrong.
A lot of speedrunners also use these as their records of proof of the speedruns, and this can include a bunch of world records, so this is extremely deleting history of both the living and the dead. -

As much as I hate it, I understand why, data and storage is expensive. However only giving us 2 months to move 1000's of videos is not realistic.

This is genuinely one of the poorest decisions Twitch has made in a while. This will be disastrous for TTRPG channels, channels that create live shows, speedrunning channels, archived charity streams, and so many more.
Any stream where chat participation is important can't just be imported to Youtube without losing that entire aspect of it. This includes charity streams where links to the charity are provided via chat, TTRPG or live show streams where the casts interacted directly with chat, and so forth.
In addition, the decision to have the 100 hour limit be introduced IMMEDIATELY means that channels don't have until April 19th to clear out their videos. They have until their next stream, which means that Twitch has effectively handicapped countless streamers in both the short term AND the long term. This happening with absolutely zero warning has caused countless streamers significant problems just in the past 24 hours.
This is an incredibly poor decision that has been executed even more poorly. I expect this to cause far more problems than it solves for Twitch. This needs to be reversed, sent back to the drawing board, and a better method for managing server storage introduced.
Possible alternatives I can think of would be:
- Giving partners or long-term streamers the ability to keep their highlights, as long as they're continuing to actively stream. If a channel hasn't gone live in 2 months, perhaps then give that two month warning. Yes, it will suck for channels where the owner has passed away or something, but it rewards those who continue to be active and keep the site running.
- Introducing tools to help promote highlights. Don't just go around promoting clips: Provide resources for creators to promote highlights and collections. Or, Twitch can introduce methods to give highlights greater visibility, themselves. Something like a main page for highlights and VODs instead of just for popular clips or currently live streams.
- Increase the requirements in order to be able to save highlights. Leave it to partners only, require a minimum amount of monthly streaming hours, or ****, if you're really desperate for money, introduce a $5-$10 "monthly storage fee" to save permanent highlights.Don't get rid of this feature. The immediate panic has already caused the loss of enough content. It's time to reverse this decision.

Honestly, the 100 hours limit is quite dumb and should not have even made it past conceptualization.
It's a slap to the face for partners.
It's a slap to the face for affiliates.
It's a slap to the face for small streamers.
It's a slap to the face for everyone.Server cost is no longer an excuse for dumb decisions.
Get with the times, Twitch, and actually ***LISTEN*** to the creators on the platform, not some Amazon exec with too much money and too many crimes. -

This new proposed limit basically punishes your longest term content creators, speedrunners, and most active streamers who have been streaming and building their communities on this platform in the last decade. Let alone only giving them 2 months to handle transferring 1000+ hrs of hightlighted videos from 10 years is unrealistic. This shows how short-sighted this decision is and how out of touch Twitch is in understanding your long term content creators are the foundations of this platform. At the minimum, partner excemption and perservation of historical content should be considered when a majority of users on this platform are viewers only and would bearly use any storage.
