Stopping superfluous clipping
There's a major issue with how people interact with the clipping system. Clips are meant to be used to share moments of interest with others. That's not how it's being used a majority of the time. A majority of the time it's being used as a rewind button.
This is bad because:
- it creates more work for streamers to find clips to feature
- it costs twitch a lot to store that data
This is due to the lack of rewind feature and a common misconception that clips are not public until you name and publish them.
2 proposed solutions that I believe will work in tandem:
1) when people click the clip button, inform them that it will instantly be saved and become public. Make then acknowledge that fact before the clip is actually made.
2) if a streamer has their VODs on and set to automatically publish there should be a scrub bar on the live video player
My observations:
I have a bot that will automatically tag a user when they clip something with a link to the clip. A majority of the time it's an unnamed clip and the user tells me they didn't realize it would be public since they never named and published it.
I always suggest that people can go to the vod of the stream as it's running if they want to rewind, but that's much more difficult for a viewer to do/understand than clipping. As long as the easy option is clipping users will continue to use it improperly which costs Twitch money and wastes streamer's time.
