Research Open Access Request
We are a cognitive neuroscience lab studying how video games can promote improved reading and attentional ability. The goal of our research is to determine what qualities of video games are most beneficial to reading and attentional ability, so that game developers and clinicians can work together to design therapeutic games to help individuals with reading or attentional disorders, such as dyslexia.
As part of this research we analyse gameplay videos of people playing various video games to determine which characteristics of video games are most beneficial to reading and attentional ability. Your platform is an excellent source of public videos from a variety of games and player skill levels. In our previous studies, our lab has collected and analysed these publicly available videos, but the collection of gameplay videos has not been shared as your platform deletes videos after 14-60 days. This makes transparency and collaboration with other researchers difficult.
We am seeking information on what options are available to develop a openly available dataset of gameplay videos that we analyse. This dataset would promote the principles of Open Access/Open Science and promote collaboration and replication in this effort to learn how video games can help human cognition. Other online platforms have provided researchers with access to these rich online samples of data (for example, Twitter provides researchers with the Twitter Research API: https://developer.twitter.com/en/products/twitter-api/academic-research).
Sincerely,
Cognitive Neuroscience Lab, University of Saskatchewan
