Ability to turn off chat reply/threads feature
The chat replies feature may be cool for some specific reasons, but most of the time is not helpful. The thread it creates is also hard to see compared to normal chat messages. It would be nice to be able to toggle this feature on or off. Similar to how you can turn off nigh mode
We have heard the feedback in this idea & its comments and reworked chat replies to reduce noise. By allowing users to reply directly to a specific message in a thread, only the user being responded to will be @'ed, rather than the user whose comment initiated the thread. Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback.
The "relevant update" is not relevant to the issue of this post.
The update isn't related to the ability to disable the thread, per user, channel or otherwise.
Thanks for fixing a bug unrelated to the core of this post.
I got an email update to this and was really hopful, that there was a decision made an the core of this subject, just to get disappointed.
I'm not angry, I just want you to know why I am frustrated about a bugfix. Because bugfixes are supposed to be a good thing.
But good communication.
Eitherway thanks for your work and effort
Man, I love how we tell you that we don't want a feature, and you update the feature, and tell us that's a "Relevant Update" to the idea of us not wanting a feature that's superceded by the @ key, and has been since Justin.TV.
The previous two people are right. My blind partner retracts her thanks, she tried it in practice and this is not helping. Sorry not sorry, it was almost two years ago I posted this request. Do better.
Agreed with the below commenter, the 2023/08 change does not address many of the root issues with Replies in chat. It is not a resolution to this request.
The update from August 3, 2023 does not address the concern posted here at all, and only fixes a bug that has been present since this feature's first appearance. Please add the ability to toggle chat replies (and the reply button) on and off.

I dont like how it looks like i keep chatting to myself when im replaying to someone else. it just makes it confusing and wrong people gets the highlight most of the time.
I need to way to turn it on/off.
I still think the reply feature is non-functional. Not only it still tags the original comment of the thread every time which is extremely bad, but also literally any remotely active chat renders your ability to see anyone replying past the first reply impossible whereas just tagging the person is more effective.
On mobile it’s even worse because the feature just isn’t there, it literally just looks like a normal tag on the original comment of the thread and you can’t check the thread.
I would actually raise the bar higher than allowing to disable it in my own chat, but also just prevent anyone from using the feature on any of my messages period. Either that or you make it functional on all platforms and no longer tagging the original message but rather the actual message you clicked on. It could still make a thread but it needs to be clear who’s replying to what within that thread, otherwise just don’t make a thread.
Please remove this feature. Its very confusing. It tags the original comment every time and creates confusion for everyone.
The reply function also makes things VERY hard for a blind streamer I mod for, she uses TTS software to read her chat and it reads the WHOLE replied-to message again.
I would love to turn it off. I actually hate that it tags the original comment on every message, it even does that on mobile but mobile actually doesn't have the thread so it's just EVEN MORE confusing. A simple reply to one message with no threading would be much better imo. Now I see the pros of the thread for busier chats, so the feature can certainly still have a spot, but I still want it off of at least my channel, I think it's not worth it in its current state. I actually actively avoid using it anywhere I go even if someone used it to reply to me, because it kills the thread and keeps it not confusing.
Ability to turn off the Chat Replies Feature.
- Chat replies destroy a good chat flow and as of right now you, as a creator or user, aren't able to disable this feature.
I'm a Twitch Partner Channel's MOD.
The feature is not work in the Channel .
How to turn on chat reply/threads feature?
Chat reply is awesome, really helps keep the conversation going and allows the chat to self moderate and add some context to their messages. <3 love this feature. I'd also love to see some type of +1, -1, system to help reward those who are adding valuable thoughts to chat.
Can we get an option to completely hide the reply feature? if people still want it allow them to have their threads but let us that do now want it to hide it and keep things the way we like it. Twitch isnt a BBS, its a chat.
Still don't like it at all, when everyone in chat uses it. it becomes very confusing and hard to moderate chat. I get that certain streamers might like it. so please let us opt out/in as streamer.
Personally, I think the chat reply feature is a terrible addition to the chat platform here on Twitch.
Having that said, perhaps instead of turning it off completely, there might be a way of keeping it for those that do like the feature. Make it channel specific where the streamer (or editors) can toggle it on or off for that specific channel.
That way, streamers that don't like it can toggle it off for their channel.
Streamers that do like it can toggle it on for their channel.
Still just as bad, copy paste doesn't work. id rather just have people @ me then have to look through a thread to see what someone is saying to me. now when people reply to me i don't even bother trying to see what they say because its more effort just to look at a reply.
Its still really bad, small chats its not really needed since you can still easily see the whole of conversations happening, and big chats it adds more to chat then is already happening and makes it harder to read and mod. They're also easier to miss in fast moving chats and if you at any point get linked in one, all following replies also tag you which makes it hard to know which you actually want to pay attention to.
I get some people might actually want this but at least allow streamers to turn it off.
its still annoying and still needs to be removed. the reply itself it useless since with user name badges and the like you get MAYBE 2 or 3 words from the message....
