Twitch category name collision
Currently two (or more) games with the exact same name (usually reboots) share the same category in Twitch. And all the cover art, description, tags are taken from only one of the games. This usually means that the other game(s) effectively completely lacks a page on twitch, despite being a completely different game and having unique gameplay. Can something be done about this?

Hey guys, Dead Space category shows wrong game and its bugged! There are 3 games of Dead Space. Mobile version, Dead Space from 2008 and now remake. Even when you switch on another one, its shows you play the mobile version. It even gives you tags like, mobile game etc... Pls fix it, or you should hire someone, who would check these things every week. -_- FYI I want to stream Dead Space Remake when I choose the right category it keeps giving me Dead Space for mobile it's confusing people

Hi, I have this issue with my game Margo. It displays the wrong image, description, and tags. It is, however, the correct link that IGDB directs to.

It should be up to Twitch to update to modern web standards, not IGDB to apply bandaid solutions on a game by game basis just to make Twitch work. The url scheme can work for channels since all channels names must be unique and the channel database is controlled by Twitch, but it can't work for categories not held to the same restriction. The responsibility especially shouldn't be put on the shoulders of a third party that provides the game database.

I've had the same issue with the Card Shark game last year and a rejected change on IGDB. Seems complaining here does not help neither.
My feeling is that this should not have been reported here in the "categories" section but in the "bugs" section. It's a twitch-side bug, and it makes sense IGDB should not be the home of a dirty workaround.
Not only the name-based url make the game page colliding but it also messes up with the miniatures showned under every live or vod on the site.
This actually make the bug highly visible as soon as a game is played by big community streamers. Even big franchises such as Resident Evil and Tomb Raider are impacted, and it's only going to be worse as even more remake are released.
Maybe the bug is actually not easy to fix, depending on how they implemented the url generation from igdb, but seems to me it's definitely worth one or two devs spending a few days on it.

Month passed and nothing happend. Please do something about this because it creates alot of problems for our community not to mention Czech and Slovak streamers overall.
Another games colliding. Especially problem for our Mafia speedrun community. Since someone added this old C64 game it keeps throwing us into that category. I would kindly ask for fix since IGDB page just would not accept to slightly rename that recently added game....

Hello Twitch & IGDB... We need separate URLs for games with duplicate names! This issue will only get worse over time as more and more exist.

It looks like IGDB accepted a change for the old Levelhead to Levelhead - 2008 even though it's not the "official name", but then an admin put in a request to change it back 2 hours later. Progress?

I think the God Of War case confirms that Twitch KNOWS of this problem, they just choose not to fix it. I'm guessing it's because they don't want to make the URL more complicated, choosing to have a simple-looking product at the expense of smaller games getting screwed over.
If that is the case, it annoys me that the IGDB response to this issue is directing people to this post, which is actively being ignored. As a reminder, IGDB is operated by Twitch.

To reiterate, the following games currently are experiencing URL overrides/name collisions on Twitch due to how IGDB supplies Twitch with the data & it's lack of unique URLS for multiple games with the same name:
Sonic the Hedgehog, Tomb Raider, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT), Super Mario Bros 2, Ninja Gaiden & NG Black, Zero Hour, Ratchet & Clank, WoW, Graviton, Resident Evil, Oni, Point Blank, Live A Live, Otherside, Levelhead, The Harvest, Oxygen, Ixion, & Mafia -

August 6th, 2022 someone added a duplicate name to igdb for a game only available on a usb stick that isn't supported by the dev any longer and ruined our twitch community

Hello Twitch! WE NEED SEPARATE URLS for games with the same name. Having two categories doesn't address the fact that even if one was created first, the one with the oldest release date takes priority for the url. PLEASE PROVIDE A FIX as we are unable to stream to our favorite games anymore.

Been getting updates on this post since I voted on it over two years ago. Baffling that literally nothing has been done outside of God of War. Even just muting this and seeing the hypocrisy would almost be preferable since people keep ending up directed here as a "solution". Friendly URLs for categories of shared names/ franchises and the individual IDs tacked onto it with the platform, release year, remake, remaster, or whatever community distinction added to the drop down menu when selecting the game you're playing seems like the best option yet the only thing that happens is more half-baked features that only serve to bloat the site and solving practically nothing for anybody most of the time.

They also refuse to acknowledge that their system prioritizes urls based on release dates
-
Lex_Limbo commented
They will tell you to come here and post to create a category for a game that already has a category on twitch

All of which could be solved by IGDB but they refuse to budge
