[MERGED] Bring back colored /me chat messages + Update the /me command to color chat messages FOR MODS/BROADCASTER ROLES ONLY
Or at least give streamers the authority to enable or disable it. But the ENTIRE point was how it stood out with color. Plain black with italics just renders it useless.
Hey all,
Thank you for the patience with us on this. This has been one of the most popular ideas on UserVoice and we definitely heard your feedback.
Today we launched /announcement for mods and streamers. Announcements can be used in chat to highlight a message and are available in 4 different colors along with the channel accent color. Because this is only part of the ask of this idea we are setting this idea to partial release so the community can continue to leave feedback on this.

Maybe if there was a setting to toggle the color, that way if a streamer thought that it wasn't okay, then they could just turn it off, I play on a Twitch Plays channel and colored text not only made the system better, but it also made it easier to read, as a dyslexic person, that white on black doesn't work, please bring it back.

the fact that /me changed the color was the entire purpose of that command, now it's completely useless and nobody likes this

I understand this was done as part of a safety issue. I'm wondering is part of it because the message was all one color? What if the /me was a different color than the user name but also a color? Perhaps users could choose a /me color that is different from their name color. I'm not sure how you enforce color picker options and what shade variations are allowed or not allowed but perhaps it's possible using math on the color codes.
It's an idea. -

This is a very annoying change that should have been proposed before it was immediately enacted. /me is now a command that makes text harder to read and could be debatably harmful due to that fact. And this... "While we recognize this change is frustrating for some, the safety of our community remains our top priority." ...is only an issue for smaller streamers who don't know how the donations system functions. A better solution than causing this mess would to make a kind of bootcamp or something for smaller creators which includes this kind of information (If such a program doesn't exist). You could include information about common software and tools, extensions, engagement, chatbots, spam, moderation, configuring your channel, and the list goes on. Not only would this benefit the twitch community at large, it would mitigate the issue so you wouldn't even need to make this unneeded change.

The answer is simple at making /me an option for streamers to enable or disable. If it is disabled any user attempting to use /me will have their message appear as normal instead of being colored. The rest of us shouldn't have to suffer because of a small group of abusers. As for the abuse, it is still unclear to many as to how it's being used abusively. Aside from that Twitch has bigger problems to deal with like streamers being 'follow boted'. In the coming days I am confident Twitch will make the right call and add an option for streamers to enable or disable the /me command.

I remember a similar situation occurred when some streamers complained about some trolls were abusing of raid command just to get attention. Twitch simply decided to stop alerting raids with 4 users or less. Instead of giving an option for the streamer to disable or not the alerts with 4 or less. The result: a lot of streamers complained about removing the raid with 4 or less then twitch put it back. But the real solution to make everyone happy was: GIVE AN OPTION. The same is colored /me: give the option to enable or disable. Make it default disabled or only allow to enable for affiliates/partner. Is not that hard to do.

@Pubtest however, it played a part. sure the mods have to be dealt with the streamers.
Yes, malware links are managed by a different process, but the malware links are sent by the some users that wish to use the command for malicious content.
Sure the abuse wont stop, but it will help.
'Your bots' what are you even on about?

It took you 9 votes to remove the me feature. We're at 4600 votes to bring it back. What more do you want? It would be pretty easy to just do an option per channel to enable or disable the colored /me and stop this witch hunt. There are so many problems way more important than colored /me and stop punishing all the community for a fraction of people that got phished by an obvious message.

Twitch. Why do you keep making changes that harm us? The /me command was crucial for accessibility and now you’ve stripped it away. You MUST do better.

Make it so channels can decide whether they want /me to have colored text or not. I seriously don't understand how someone would even be fooled by a fake donation with colored text... Absolutely *no one* I have spoken with in my channel or the several other channels that I frequent is happy with this change.

Unbelievable this important part of my (and many others) community got changed cause of a mistake by streamers that is so easily avoided and is one of the most basic principles of having your stream in order. I went through the help center to leave a message but found this after.
BRING. IT. BACK.
/me brings the pitchforks.

/me was absolutely fine as is, I can see the interest in being able to disable it for certain user groups in your chat, but to change it into white+italics really ruined it for a LOT of communities I'm a part of.
Why not instead introduce /italics for this purpose?

@OOR_Olymphus Your comment is incoherent and makes little sense.
You haven't proven anything. You have stated a bunch of questions, and even suggested topics outside this discussion. Mods are a Streamers issue. Malware links are managed by a different process.
The issue in discussion is about the 'highlight capability' of the /me feature. Trolls use the highlight to stand out above normal chat message, sure.
This is true whether /me be coloured, italics, or as your suggest bold. This change did nothing to solve the 'abuse' vector.
If Twitch believes there is 'abuse' in chat, then fix the chat platform. I am going to suggest that the Chat Team should not be paid this month or use their salary to gift subs to the channels they have wronged - maybe that will encourage them to do better.
Edit: I see you are not affiliated. Get in touch and I will show you how to use your bots and the /me command to get some hype. It will help with your push to affiliate.

1MasterOfSun No i do not agree with that one bit. the color is there to troll followers and subs if left in colored, So resotring it will make it easier to abuse.
just proven my point that this would end up getting abuse. this is the reason why I do believe that bold and black text, and not in italic would work better as it would stop that abuse by trolls.
How many time i have seen a link put on the chat with that command and it was malicious containing viruses and malware not from a moderator or admin (streamer)? how many time a moderator who went AWOL had to be removed of the moderator permissions because they went over the top with followers and subs who used the command and banned them without a reason?
really this has proven my point that the color text with the /me command. needs to be change.

I know I've said my peace on this before, but something new has come to mind: A great way to make these changes to help mitigate irritating the masses of your users, streamers/mods/viewers alike, would be do post something on Social Media. Make a poll, ask for input BEFORE making these kinds of drastic changes.... It would look better on you to get input for such issues before hand, from not just Partnered Streamers, but Affiliates, non-affiliates, and viewers alike. Having someone make such arbitrary changes for us because they can't see the other side of things is not a good look. You have 140 MILLION+ people that can give you input, and you have a team of people making these choices and frankly, sometimes it feels like a slap in the face when these changes have little to no "resolution" power on issues.

I don't understand how a coloured whale peepoo ASCII art is more hurtful than one in italics.
What I'm trying to say is, you did not fix the issue you claim was the reason for getting rid of chat colours.
It's still there. Just not colourful anymore. And ******* the eyes. You simply took fun away from the lighthearted part of your community, without adding any additional protection against the trolls.
This makes me sad.

the italics is difficult to read, it's causing eye strain issues. this needs to be accessible, I moderate for several streamers, including a partnered streamer with a fast-paced chat. I can't be pausing all the time for headaches and eyestrain that the chat text is causing. I loved colored chat, but I don't care if it's colored chat or not at this point, just PLEASE get rid of the italics.
as far as the donation issue it sounds like you were trying to mitigate, that should be built into AutoMod. if our bots can be programmed to block it, so can AutoMod.

The color needs to be restored, it's just a nice gimmick that expands the chatbox and is fun just because a few people are out of control. You can't punish everyone for it
