Implement a filter that would be present no matter what section of the site you are on allowing you to filter based on a primary language.
1) Force a streamer to select a single primary language
2) Allow streamer to select multiple secondary languages
3) Implement a filter that would be at the top of any search/game/category listing...
The filter should have two features.
- Allow user to filter based on primary language ONLY
- Allow user to sub-filter based on secondary languages optionally
This accomplishes two goals.
1) Allow the viewer to filter down to streamers that for the majority of the time will speak the language you set as primary.
2) Allow the viewer if they so desire to include secondary languages. Most viewers are not interested in watching a stream that is 50% Russian and 50% English however we should not remove that option as it takes away from the experience.
Trying to find a good channel for any game in Twitch is annoying currently as you sometimes go 4-5 channels before you even find one in your language depending on the time of day. This takes away from the experience and with new platforms such as YouTube Gaming coming....you know they will have this feature. Get ahead of the curve.
Twitch does not innovate much lately...the site looks about the same as it did 2-3 years ago. With from a viewers perspective...same features almost...not much has made Twitch better.
The moment you stop innovating you die. So lets avoid that!
With established tags removed (now being entirely creator-made/shared), being a moderator, I've seen an incredible influx of not only non-native speakers who are both confused and then offended their primary language isn't welcome in chats (as foreign languages can be difficult to moderate if you don't speak them), but those who use their non-native language to say terrible things in chat believing they can get away with it. This suggestion (or something similar) would not only help streamers and their moderators, but improve viewer experience, as well.
This broke recently. For a long time I was default filtered to English. For the first time since freeform tags, I removed that filter to check how much else was in one category. Now I can't go back. "english" seems to filter, although "English" is displayed by each stream. However, now it's not persistent and I have to re-add the tag every time I browse.
I could've sworn before the custom tag "update" that if you had a language selected in your creator dashboard... it would automatically add the tag to your streams??? now it does not. this was at LEAST somethinggggg just give this feature back
This suggestion was made in 2015 and there still is no way of properly filtering for languages. The tag system was never great for language filtering, because not every streamer picked a language tag. But since the change to custom tags it's even worse.
Filtering for "English" - or any tag for that matter - doesn't carry over to different game directories. You have to manually set the filter every time. And of course now most of the streams don't have any language tag at all, so filtering for "English" means you don't see half of the English-speaking streams. Even the ones that had this tag before now lost it.
Now with new filters, it's impossible to search by language
Some languages should have a special treatment. e.g. Spanish - There is European Spanish and Latin American Spanish. You should be able to search all variants or just one variant. Similarly German. There is Low German, Bavarian/Austrian German, Swiss German and some other variants. Another case is Balkan/Adria/South Slavic languages. They are basically the same and you should be able to search all of them at once.
The user's language should be one of the suggested filters in the "filter by tags". Currently one has to search all tags and find their language in a large drop-down.
This is for the Android app (not sure how it is implemented on other platforms).

With the new app Primary languauge follows systems settings which is really bad! Many users are multi-lingual and have different preference of system language that differs from the language of stream they watch!

Add option to filter streams by language, so you could filter only "English" streams etc.
