[MERGED] Bring back colored /me chat messages + Update the /me command to color chat messages FOR MODS/BROADCASTER ROLES ONLY
Or at least give streamers the authority to enable or disable it. But the ENTIRE point was how it stood out with color. Plain black with italics just renders it useless.
Hey all,
Thank you for the patience with us on this. This has been one of the most popular ideas on UserVoice and we definitely heard your feedback.
Today we launched /announcement for mods and streamers. Announcements can be used in chat to highlight a message and are available in 4 different colors along with the channel accent color. Because this is only part of the ask of this idea we are setting this idea to partial release so the community can continue to leave feedback on this.

Why not have it as an option for streamers to turn off, rather than having it default off for everybody. If people are having issues they can remove the functionality, but this seems to be superseding the concern of people.

Appreciate the update, but this seems like an odd way to address abuse. Is it possible to permission-gate the /me command rather than render it obsolete in terms of its functionality? Thanks a ton for taking the time to listen!

Hello,
People do not see moderators messages anymore. Same for bots promoting news or events. Italic is as good as invisible.
It would be really great if mods and bots could keep the function.
Thank you for your attention. -

If the issue is streamers being abused MAYBE just MAYBE the people doing the abusing are the thing you need to deal with - changing the chat colors is not the way to do that. The abuse still happens it is just in italics now. If the safety of your community is your top priority you should be dealing with the problem people and not making it harder for streamers. If the issue is the fake donations then just ban /me donated. If the issue is viewers not liking the colors in chat then the viewer can just select readable colors in chat appearance.

The italic just goes under when the chat goes through like this. The advantage of the colored one was that it really stood out. If the mods had something to say, for example, or if there was a give away.
Couldn't it at least be changed so that mods can still use it or if you are a sub, it is unlocked?
The people who want to cause damage are seldom sub.
Please please do not take away the colored writing.
sorry for my bad english -

"abuse against members of our community"? so if someone writes it in italics, it's fine. but if it's in colored text, it's offensive?
What kind of logic is this? LUL -

This does not solve any abuse issues, it just changed the style of the text. It might be best for everyone to revert it back immediately until you get whatever you need sorted out. whether it be a toggle or a new option for the text. Right now all you have is all sides angry about an enjoyable function.

I don't understand why we couldn't have both format choices? This was a needless change, and if there really was an issue there were so many other potential solutions. Not great decision-making here.

Removing /me is ridiculous. It's so easy to miss Twitch messages, why would they make it so much more difficult to distinguish messages?
And beyond that, it removes character and personality from a medium sorely lacking those things.
Can Twitch get a good competitor already, so we can finally abandon the platform?

There is no actual harm or threat to safety that is caused by a font being coloured instead of italics. It's still there. It just looks different. You're not taking the potential "abuse" way. Making something look different doesn't stop any potential harm.
Instead, you're making it extremely difficult for those with dyslexia and sight problems to read Twitch chat. This should be a viewer setting like light and dark modes. Also add in a colour blind mode while you're at it please.

"safety of our community remains our top priority"
Yet spam bots linking to "Wanna be famous?" still plague the site. Bots spam follows clogging up alert feeds. Bots and people target people with the "LGBTQ+" tag and harrass and abuse the streamer.
These should be WAY higher on the priority list than a simple color change in chat messages.
We want more explanation as to HOW exactly does colored text count as abuse.

That is such a load of bull to say "perpetrate abuse". What happened to moderators and streamers moderating their own chat.
Reread what you just wrote, that context is weak as heck.

As far as the change being frustrating - I would be more on board with it if the change enhanced the safety of our community. However, it only modifies how the same abusive text appears, which does not mitigate abuse in any way - merely italicizes it.

Text emoting is dead now. I am very curious about the reasoning stated: "The safety of our community..."
What on earth could have possibly been "unsafe"? Was someone actually *harmed*, or did they just look silly falling for a fake donation? -

Honestly, the context you provided to justify the change only makes it more unjustified.
How can colored messages put community's safety at risk? Because you're not talking about negatively affecting users' experiences, no, you're talking about perpetrating abuse and safety. Those are big words.
And if colored messages did put safety at risk, how is it that just changing them to italics suddenly removes that risk, without any other consideration like limiting the feature to a subset of users (broadcasters/mods/staff). Makes absolutely no sense.
P.S. VODs still render /me messages with colors instead of italics. I guess safety at VODs is not important, huh?

Having everything in grey makes it really difficult to distinguish one users message from another. If you're worried about abuse, give back the colors so stream mods can more readily identify who posted a particular message. Doesn't seem that hard to figure out, assuming you actually use a little common sense.

I'm not sure what abuse you've stopped by changing colour to italics. Now the abuse is just in a different font. anyone can still type /me donated $ or whatever else people were using it for. The only thing you've done is punished the 99.99999% of users who didn't use the feature to troll. Brownie points for replying I guess. Looking forward to updates.

Hi, with respect, I would like to have an active discussion via an open message service or platform about how this change helps protect anyone. If your answer is "abuse"... pack the bags and change it back. This is a very harmful change to many users with visual and cognitive impairments and will not solve the problem you think it will. Donation text from bots presents itself via /me... you can change the bot response in your bot settings to not use /me if you'd like... /me will still be used by your bots if you don't... now it's simply italicized, which I'm not sure if you've noticed, but it won't stop troll messages from looking like dono-messages. /me messages do not look like twitch system messages which present as either white or black bolded text. Consider informing users that they may have to encounter false donations before they start streaming. I apologize if this appears rude, but as does your PR oriented copy paste message, that read only the benefits of the previous system and not the extreme downsides and honest lack of benefit to the new system. It proves that the current 369 comments, soon to be 370 and most likely many more, haven't been read carefully. A genuine thank you for providing a platform and attempting to make a uservoice forum, I appreciate the work you do.

How is colored text affecting someone's safety?? Twitch, please elaborate on your "context", provide numerous examples and be clear why you did this. Until you do, this was a completely irrational move that has upset many more than it has helped.

Just bring back the colours. Literally NO ONE thought this was a problem. Find some other worthwhile real problems to fix instead of ambulance chasing anything you think might further the ridiculous notion that you have to keep growing instead of just sitting there making more money than the gods I don't believe in, and making a better platform for us who are already here
