Please consider an ad style like Youtube, please read the reason enclosed, important
Hi there Twitch & Staff,
Please consider this feedback regarding the way the ads are currently deployed on your platform and the negative impact they end up having on streamers.
I believe that the long chunking of ads that will play while you're watching any given stream is adversely affecting your platform in unforeseen ways. Someone like myself will watch a stream for a half hour of time and then end up 'changing the channel' when I see 1 of 5 ads queued up when an adbreak happens.
This ends up amounting to someone watching a stream and enjoying the content and being conditioned to switch off of the channel because they don't want to sit through 3 minutes of ads and therefor the streamer who has just earned that revenue by streaming for 30 minutes is the one to lose out because someone changed the channel. Your current model of ad rollout is harming the creators it's meant to reward. It could be said 'ok yes, but don't change the channel then'. This is fair, but by and large it's a lot to ask of people who don't know the streamer, any more than when we all had Cable TV anybody would have channel loyalty to keep sitting through the commercials. Even then we had shows that would say "Don't change that dial, we'll be right back". This allowed stations to at least beckon to the end users to stay put. This used to be the case with "On the hour" Ad breaks (Thank you Hasan, I remember this from your channel). It seems like those days are long gone as your platform has seemingly now been riddled with ads.
I may make a separate post about this, but while watching an offline VOD (the user wasn't live anymore, I had 1 of 5 ads play in the Picture in Picture player, then immediately (within 30 seconds) play full screen 1 of 5 ads. This amounts to about 10 ads back to back, and I have no Ad-Blocker installed whatsoever so there was no punitive pushback on me from any anti-adblock programming, this was just purely what you guys have sanctioned to happen. The streamer was even offline which goes to show that they didn't run the excessive ads.
Allowing more frequent ads (maybe once every 15 minutes (allowing for 4 ad breaks an hour which is still plenty I hope) with it being skippable after 10 seconds (to ensure that advertiser gets their fair chance to make an impression) would solve for a lot.
You might think 'ok, then pre-rolls are the answer instead of mid-rolls'.. Not so much, as you're again stifling lesser known creators. People will just grimace and bear the 3 minute ad block instead of checking out someone new and seeing their content because they'll have to sit through ads with each new click.
Lastly, regarding Twitch Turbo: It may seem like a good idea to run a lot of ads to that people will buy twitch Turbo, but now you've vastly de-incentivized people from buying subs (providing 40% off of one sub is very underwhelming, offering 40% off all subs is smart and encourages people with the money to to still be generous while not having to suffer ads themselves). This will make you more money to have them on twitch Turbo, but there's no true transparency for what the channel should have made because the ads never run. What level of trust does the creator have to know that they will be paid appropriately? They also lose out dramatically as they no longer get the sub revenue they once did. To properly picture how this would all work out, imagine your entire site switched to a subscription model of twitch turbo to access it, and kept only the ad-based model (which now never played because everybody has turbo), how much would the streamer make from these skipped ads? I believe it might be a lot less, and therefore you're cannibalizing your own interests with pushing people to twitch turbo as streamers become disincentivized and may switch to alternative platforms to make revenue.
I hope this helps you and the streamers who stream here.
Thank you and God Bless you <3
