Remove mid-roll ads
Cancel the testing of mid-roll ads on affiliate and partner channels. Your viewer base doesn't want this and creators don't want ads playing out of their control interrupting their content
As we announced on Twitter earlier, we have concluded the mid-rolls experiment. Thank you all for your comments and the incredible momentum you’ve contributed to this topic.
There have been many great suggestions, both in this thread and in the Ads forum that we have taken back to the team for consideration. It’s important to know that ads are essential to the future of Twitch, however we want to make things as painless as possible. Please still upvote, share, comment, and create new ideas in this forum so that we may continue to benefit from all of your passionate influence.

Creators don't want this because it ruins the viewer experience and causes them to miss things, viewers don't want this for the same reason.
PEOPLE ARE LITERALLY ENCOURAGING THEIR VIEWERS TO USE ADBLOCK SO THEY HAVE A BETTER EXPERIENCE
This is one of the most tone deaf "features" added from the twitch team. literally no one wants it but you guys. Either give streamers complete control over this or just don't do it

I will stop using Twitch if this happens. It doesn't affect me at all to watch the VoDs on Youtube or listen to the podcasts on Spotify. And I know I'm not alone in this. All this stupid idea will do is hurt creators.

I would happily no longer take a cut of the ad revenue.

Why is TV dying out? People are fed up watching forced Ads.
Sure you need to generate profit to be able to provide better functionality. So let us find a way both sides are ok with it? I believe no streamer (small or big) approves of being interrupted by an ad mid stream.
Viewers will just vanish from small streams or streams they have not subed and just stick with the streams they have already subed. In the long rund this would hurt twitch in sub revenues and ad revenues too.
Especially if this function is not recognizable by the streamer, while streaming. I do not see when an add will be shown unless I trigger them myself (as per now system). So you going to interrupt people in the middle of something interesting.
How about instead just use that small window popout for constant advertising (without sound). Sure it is less than a big audio ad but people would probably approve of it rather than have the now discussed big ad with sound and a popout of the stream with no sound.
How about to make an extension where streamers can add ads to their panels (maybe choose from certain supplier-groups/regions). IE. I get french advertising but I live in the german part of Switzerland so those ads are just a waste of time.
If I could set some parameters, ie. Language German, Country CH you would be able to show more localized ads to localised viewers. Additionally having the possibility to add those information would also make it super easy for viewers to find streamers of their region/language, which is currently still a mess. How about to popup over the chat window instead of the stream window an add? For a cheap viewer I would accept this kind of chat interruption but not the streamer being interrupted. In combination with the related Gametitle this could be interesting for publishers.
If you link the amazon extension where people put their equipment you could run grab this information to show ads for this equipment to a much more narrowed down audience, which will more likely buy the stuff.
How about an overlay type of ad with no sound, that can be closed anytime (but has to be closed manually) by the viewer?
Do you even monitor/know how many viewer each streamer loses while the intro ad is running? The number for inbetween ad wont be any better.
VODs should be better searchable or indexed. I easily find old streams through search engines which are on YT but I cant for twitch. Better findability also leads to more views on VODs. Which then allows to have ads on VODs.

I feel like the only thing these mid-roll ads are testing is users patience.
You want to see how bad the backlash is and if it’s worth the risk to go against your users for $ right?
If I’m wrong by all means correct me, but is the user experience worth that much more money to a corporation that’s already rich?
Please don’t implement this. You see the test results already.

You can improve it by not doing it. This undermines your entire platform. This will DRIVE new viewers away not towards your platform. Google doesn’t do this to live content wanna know why? Because it’s a dumb idea.

Even as a small Twitch Partner I find that there are no benefits to this. You earn literally close to nothing from these ads if you aren’t pulling big digits, and even then it’s better for you to just get paid by a sponsor.
This works only for Twitch and not for it’s content creators. Make ads skippable or have those said ads turn up as seperate small videos on the side instead so you don’t block out the potential amazing content your creators are trying to create on your platform!

Midroll ads are ******* stupid. All you will do is drive away viewers.

would you pay Netflix and accept that advertising will come no metter if you pay or not ?? sorry i would not accept that. what if my content is very important at the moment and the ads will break it and no one can see what is happening than ... twitch is not TV .. twitch is better than that .. and what will the subs do ?? they pay for support and pay for no advertising ... how should streamer now earn money from the subs when a sub is nothing special anymore for the viewer?? will they sub again ?? i think many people will leave if you do not remove the ads.

This is just another example of Twitch not giving a **** about their users and viewers, everything in the name of money. NOBODY likes it. Me both as a viewer and as a small streamer completely disagrees with this idea.
Viewers leave upon seeing ads mid-stream and it's not a single instance of this happening. Great example of this annoying fact is YouTube, Twitch's biggest competitor, with their double, unskippable ads mid-video which are extremely annoying. And as a streamer, I do appreciate the ability to control when and how the ads are viewed so people don't miss out on content. Please - DO GIVE IT UP. -

Things that can be done to fix Twitch’s ad experience:
-make them skippable
-make them shorter
-allow “lower third” ads
-utilize space next to the stream
-give creators an actual cut of the revenue
-make an option where if you have enough active subs it counts as Twitch turbo -

Ads currently provide no additional benefit for mid-smaller channels (revenue is super low).
All mid rolls would do is ruin the experience for viewers, send people away from our channels, and cause detrimental frustration in the community.

This not only disturbs the experience for everyone but is especially bad for channels that focus on ASMR. Our generation ran from tv ******** to internet. Don’t drag us back to boomer thinking. This is one of the reasons why I hate Facebook videos under watch section. Facebook is always a disturbed experience.

I chose twitch over other streaming platforms because of the interactivity with viewers. I remember when the option to remove preroll ads with mid roll ads came in, I and my viewers didnt like it so I stopped doing it. Playing these ads and muting the stream takes the viewers out of that interaction, wether its a key moment in a story, a final match in a tournament or just the streamer talking to the viewers. Viewers that miss these moments will be upset. Now lets take a look at it from a streamers point of view, lets say im having a conversation with someone then they get an advert, I then have to wait 30 to 90 seconds for them to respond and depending on the content im streaming this can really bring the stream to a stand still. This results in viewers getting bored and clicking off the stream and therefore less viewers for you to advertise to.
So I propose this idea: let the viewers decide when to engage with advertisement. OH WAIT you already do with the option to watch ads for bits. Everytime I click that button I have no ads available, has been like that since launch. I would happily sit and watch 10 minutes of ads for those bits if the option was available to me. Maybe you guys need the ads to be on the channel specifically to compete with youtube, ok then still make it optional. Have a warning countdown like “advert in 10 seconds” and give the viewer time to say no skip the ad, that way they wont miss key moments. Dont think enough viewers will opt in to ads? Give them a reward like you do with bits. Give them channel points that they can then use to further interact with the stream.
Most of my viewers are on mobile and they hate it when they get an advert, making the stream small for them isnt a solution has their screens are already tiny. So maybe have the advert be the smaller option. Invest in banner advertisement that can show up on the bottom rather than interrupt the live experience. Theres a reason football pitches have screens around the field rather than stopping the match every few minutes. Or if you’re adamant about video advertisement then have it as a little box that the streamers or viewers can move around, most of us already design layouts so give us the option to put it somewhere we see fit.
You guys thrive on the way viewers can impact a stream through bits, points and even just chat commands. Dont take that interaction away from us, encourage us to watch adverts when we want to don’t force us to miss out.

Please cancel this, twitch. Or at least make the ads mute-able so I can still listen to the stream. I am also a tiny streamer myself and I do art and Only talk to people. It would be horrible if I had to start repeating myself over and over cause my viewers missed me talking to them.

We do not want our content silenced and overlayed with ads at random points during our streams. You say these ads benefit the content creator but small streamers like me are lucky to earn 20 cents a month from ad revenue so it absolutely does not benefit us when compared to the loss of potential revenue we will face when people inevitably leave our streams because of these intrusive ads.
Ads should be secondary to the streams content, why not use banner ads, ads that can be closed after a 3-5 secs or picture in picture with the ad being the smaller image.
Twitch is not TV, the numbers show that up to 1/3 of viewers leave streams when ads run midstream, you are making it harder for small streamers to build a community and in return they have the ability to earn a couple of dollars a YEAR for ad revenue.
I haven't even mentioned how this affects some content more than others ie ASMR streams and TTRPG streams.
You are not doing this for the streamers benefit yet you are marketing is as such. Disgraceful behaviour!

MelikaJ93 commented
This is going to hurt channels and the only ones benefitting are the ad companies and Twitch themselves! I don't want my viewers missing content just because they aren't subscribed, it's really unfair to my viewers and could result in people leaving. Give people the choice to opt out!

As has been mentioned in this comment section it would be extremely painful experience if you are mid way through sharing sympathy for someone who might be going through a hard time... mid way through trying to offer your support, they never see it because and advert trying to sell something no one ever pays attention to anyway decides to show up and prevent them getting what might be exactly the support they need in that moment.
The vast majority of streamers focus heavily on community engagement which this latest update directly says "NOPE" to. Broken conversations, repeating ourselves because of adverts, all this is extremely disruptive to the platform we want to provide people.
I understand this might be a plan to 'encourage' (in a harsh way) people to subscribe and that might be your reverse psychological strategy here, but really, its a painful process and very much targets those who simply cannot afford to pay all the streamers they want to watch without having targeted ads thrown in their faces.

Keep it as is, this stupid idea of midroll ads will not only kill any momentum small streamers have had but also ruin sound-based channels. I can't wait to go on Just Chatting and watch people talk while listening to a stupid purple or bounty ad that I just don't care about. I hope everyone gets ad blockers now!
