Remove mid-roll ads
Cancel the testing of mid-roll ads on affiliate and partner channels. Your viewer base doesn't want this and creators don't want ads playing out of their control interrupting their content

As we announced on Twitter earlier, we have concluded the mid-rolls experiment. Thank you all for your comments and the incredible momentum you’ve contributed to this topic.
There have been many great suggestions, both in this thread and in the Ads forum that we have taken back to the team for consideration. It’s important to know that ads are essential to the future of Twitch, however we want to make things as painless as possible. Please still upvote, share, comment, and create new ideas in this forum so that we may continue to benefit from all of your passionate influence.

There are absolutely NO positives to this, it's going to ruin a lot of streamer experiences. Someone had seven ads in one stream, SEVEN. Not cool. Sort it out, twitch. A lot of people move streams during ads, and small streamers especially are going to suffer from it.
Ads are annoying, but those streamers we support we sit through them, and they play ads when they take breaks. But if you keep up with midroll ads, it's going to push A LOT of people away.

As a fairly regular mobile viewer that does not block ads on mobile, I am debating looking into it. While watching a Twitch streamer, I would much prefer ads roll when they choose, not when some automated system chooses. Sure, some of the time the mid-roll ads hit in a dull spot and I miss none of "the action," but I have had plenty of ads hit while "the action" is happening or the streamer is mid-conversation on something I want to hear.
I have sat through some mid-roll ads - usually putting my phone down to do something else and coming back a couple minutes later - but there have been plenty of times where I just shut the app down and do something else all together. Streamers are losing my engagement - but (from what it seems) more importantly to Twitch, Twitch is losing my engagement.
Please reconsider this decision.

Seems to me like Twitch believes that mixer's demise means they have no alternatives.
Sorry, but there are ALWAYS alternatives, even if those aren't yet as developed and good as twitch.
This ad policy will push people out of the platform or cause them to use third party ad blockers which defeat the original purpose of supporting the streamer.

EVERY 10 MINUTES!!!!!! this is ridiculous, affiliates are losing viewers, even i'm losing interest in streams where i cant watch content, and i have to subscribe to do so......this looks more like a twitch money grab then a creator benefit

Mid-roll ads ruined my stream on Tuesday. Wednesday NO-ONE came back and my average viewer count went from 10 to .4
Thanks Twitch. Its taken months of no support and my own hard dedication to build up to keeping at least 10-15 viewers on stream and in just one 3hr sitting you destroyed my channel.

Pls don't Midrolls are always something that throws the audience out of their enjoyment. The reason i like twitch was that you could watch your favourite streamer after one ad and just enjoy them playing games or being creative. Midrolls are just one thing: A throwoff for ppl and a reason to get an effective ad-blocker.

As a starting streamer, I am kinda unsure even WHY you are doing this, Twitch. You make enough money to keep staff paid and that includes R&R staff, and still make a huge profit. And this really destroys the opportunity of growth of newer streamers big-time. You know, the newer streamers that you don't have to pay out their earnings because it is less than 100 bucks (20 T1 subs) a month....

It's highly intrusive to roll during a streamers content, there is space before or after the stream to roll ads.
You could add add to the home page while people are selecting a channel to watch. -

When streamers were given the option to roll commercial breaks of their own volition, we were told to TELL our viewers that we're rolling an ad. We can't do that with midrolls. We can't prepare our community for midroll ads, and they may cause many small, just starting, streamers to hemorrhage viewers: their community that they're trying to build. All this will do is cause Twitch to LOSE ad revenue, because any viewers that will stay on site, will implement ad blockers. Please, Twitch. Don't force midrolls. Please make it optional, like pre-rolls.

this is the first time that i really think about getting an adblocker and i am an enemy of that because i think free services should get their revenue.
But this.. is so intrusive and unfun.

I get it, Twitch wants to make more money. But I can say right now that this mid-roll ads will have the wrong result.
I have PTSD and block all ads because of it. As it is, I watch Twitch less and less to avoid intrusive ads for channels I'm not subscribed to. I am disabled, I can't subscribe to everyone I want to support. I subscribed to Turbo so that I could turn adblock off while on Twitch and still support the streams I watch. Then, I used Prime to do that when it became a thing. Then they took away the adfree viewing on Prime, so I started using adblock because getting Turbo AND Prime is three less subs every month. That takes money DIRECTLY away from the streams I want to support - and directly from the people making Twitch the money in the first place. I am NOT cool with that. Now, adblock doesn't block the ads, so that leaves me spending less and less time on Twitch to ensure that I don't end up seeing a trigger on some random ad unrelated to the channel I'm watching. At this point, these mid-roll ads are Twitch's way of telling me they don't need my viewership on anyone's channel. I realize that I don't matter because I'm not some big spender on the site, but I also know that I am NOT the only person who avoids ads due to mental health issues. Twitch is fully shooting itself in the foot, here. Big mistake.
Also, so much for promoting an inclusive environment.

The lack of control and timing makes for an abysmal experience as both a viewer and a streamer. I experienced my first mid-roll ad while a streamer was in the middle of answering a question I asked, and when the ad was over, they had moved on. I also stream and do audio performances, and this is like a Broadway show being interrupted in the middle of a song for 15 seconds, but the musical isn't pausing, so you just hop back in, having missed a crucial verse. The ASMR community literally cannot exist if they cannot opt-out of this. People who do readings or any sort of audio-only stream is being slapped in the face by this. This completely undermines the concept of streaming as live entertainment. Please revert this change or allow streamers to easily opt-out. My condolences to the Twitch community managers who have to deal with this, I know it's not your fault.

There are certainly better solutions than mid-roll ads. Premium Pay for ad-less streaming? Would strongly support this.

Ads are completely fine if done at the appropriate time. Mid-roll is not the way to go about this. It's incredibly disruptive and can ruin moments. There are quite a few idea's within https://twitter.com/TheMilliebug/status/1306168686299013121 that thread that I think could be possible solutions.

Is it possible that, instead of running mid-roll ads without the streamer's input, run pip ads in the corner, banner ads, let Twitch users pay a flat $9.99 fee per month to disable mid-roll ads on all channels, etc? Anything except this.

We don't want midgame ads. It's a live stream this is the experience we choose to have. Ads only in the beginning and end of the video.

I use twitch mostly for live play gams like DnD. I entirely supportive of advertising on the platform or other revenue generation, but interrupting live performances is very problematic for me as a viewer. It’s possible I’ll miss something critical.

Mid-roll ads conflict with the culture of live-streaming and detracts from Twitch's main product - a live viewing experience. Forcing an ad regimen (that is frankly obnoxious) upon streamers will hinder the creative process and promote conformity: once unique content now all begins adhering to the same formula. Without getting into the "why I hate ads" argument, here are some solutions I've considered, or seen and heard presented by others over the past couple of days:
- Streamers opt-in to pay a "no-ad" tax from their paycheck to make their channel ad-free for all viewers.
- Viewers pay for a premium on top of normal sub prices for an ad-free experience platform-wide.
- Viewers pay for a separate "no-ad" plan, charged similarly as that of a normal sub. Maybe they earn channel points at a higher rate in exchange.
- That last one sounds a bit like Twitch Turbo. Maybe those site banners I'm about to mention could be put to use to bring Turbo to people's attention.
- Ad banners in dead space.
- Those banner ads that you can close out of inside of the video player.
- Silent ads that occasionally play in a corner of the video player - this could be a form of mid-rolls that would be a lesser evil.
- Front-page video ads.
- Voluntary ad-viewing to give an individual or channel an ad-free experience.
- Voluntary ad-viewing for extra channel points.
- Lean more into ads for bits/TwitchRPG.
- If we're desperate, maybe small banners or interactive ads in the chat box.
- Consolidating the ad regimen: 5 min/hour to disable pre-rolls for the hour. 10 min/2 hours to disable pre-rolls for 2. This encourages PROPER break lengths that are not jarring for streamers or community.
- Allowing streamers to choose what kind of content ads on their channel will show.
- Allowing viewers to choose what kind of ads they want to be exposed to.
