Free inactive usernames after a time period.

We’re reviewing this. Curious how long you think would be ok.

8 years later after “we are reviewing this” and no traction. But hey, we got paid super chats now!

My literal name is taken by an inactive, no followers account. I would love to actually have my name....

it seems ridiculous that after 8 years no change has been made

I see this request is now mark as "Planned". How do we follow up on this? I really hope they take this request seriously. I would love to know more and fully support this change.

I agree, there’s accounts that are lost and forgotten. If they’re deleted, then people will have a chance to claim the usernames they’re after.

Greetings,
same here. A useraccount has been completely blank and empty, 0 Streams and whatever for more than a decade already. I would finally like to "take over" this..

Soooo... this idea was floated on May 14, 2015. After 8 years has this still not happened?

I completely agree with you, but I would add that after changing the username, the previous name was available regardless of whether it was used earlier or not.

The username that I would like to have for my account has been inactive for over 13 years, and their last stream was from an iPhone 4. They aren't an affiliate or anything, I don't understand why older accounts are allowed to just hold users. It would be great to be able to take the name, possibly emailing the person beforehand. If they want to keep the name, they can reactivate their account. If they don't want it or the email is ignored, it will be released after a certain time.

Would like to know what is happening with this. I am currently trying to do a rebrand to a desired name which seems to have been inactive since 2015.

@SabinFails That makes no sense. Search Engines parse almost all Twitch-Profile-Pages on a daily basis. According to your logic, no name will ever be recycled.
-
SabinFails commented
Part of the problem is that people are going to the profile page to see when they were last active, and the act of viewing the page causes the timer to reset.

At least create a tool that shows people the last time a username connected to a web server. I have been eyeing a username for a long time. It is only following one other channel from three years ago and that channel stopped streaming and posting videos three years ago.

I ve changed my username many times mostly because I regret changing it in the 1st place, tried to get it back but it was taken by an a user thats been inactive from the moment he took the username, I think his account has been completely inactive ever since, A good idea would be to just change the inactive username by adding a word or number at the end of it after a set period of inactivity, ex: 1`year if the account was created for the sole purpose of taking the username, so even at the odd ocasion that the inactive user decides to come back to the platform as an active member he can still have his account and part of his username and decide again if he wants to keep the deafult one given by twitch or change it. When youtube had the terrible idea to add a second identification for peoples channels by adding "@" before your username people just stormed in to take already used usernames and people that didn't notice in time now have two diferent identifications that sometimes dont match, I do understand that usernames/channels can be sold for profit, I do disagree with the practice but there has to be way for active users to be able to have the username they realy want rather than beeing forced to have something else just cause a bot-account claimed their username for potential profit. ty for your time.

With the amount of new bot-accounts every day, the amount of "usable" usernames is getting less and less. Might be time to release some old once back into the wild The username i would love to have is almost 14 (!!!) years old and as far as i can tell, has never followed someone nor has been followed by someone (except me). 14 years is a long time. Some Twitch-users haven't even been born back then

It's a frakin' need for some ppl who have auto-business and can't claim their own usernames (like me and this frakin "Alzhe" username).
