Programming should be a seperate category from Science & Technology

Every time I am trying to find a programming or game development stream to watch (which is a very specific type of stream) I get lost in all the growing plants and raising chickens 24/7 streams. While on the other hand there are a lot of programming and or game development streams that really deserve their own category. Being a part of the live-coders community I feel that splitting science & technology in a more granular way would benefit everybody. Both in terms of search-ability and clarity.

    I asked about this problem on TwitchDev Discord. An admin of this Discord (but not affiliated with Twitch as far as I understand) Dist said:

    "there is discussions internally at Twitch on category policy and what should or shouldn't be included"

    So hopefully we'll see a response from Twitch in the next 1-2 weeks. For how long you can discuss it, right?

    Twitch should even go further and push educational streams on Twitch. But it probably doesn't make them enough Money ;)

    +1 for the idea.

    Would agree with the proposal as it currently is very difficult to accurately describe what topic the stream will address when just being able to choose science and technology category and tags like web development, since web development nowadays is a very broad and unspecific term.

    A little more customizability for this would be a great increase for the user experience for streamers and people who want to specifically watch streams about a certain topic

    I 100% agree that there should be individual categories for Live Coding, Hardware Hacking, etc. My thoughts is that Makers & Crafting is where they intended for some of that to go, but I'm not entirely sure that is accurate either as a Maker can be someone tinkering with a Raspberry Pi or someone spinning a table leg on a lathe, the two are in no way related.

    As someone who frequents the Science and Tech category with my streams, please break out more niche tech streams into their own categories so we can stand out!

    I understand that the Science & Technology category is hardly the largest category on twitch, but it is one of the most unique categories on the platform. We have a lot of content creators there that are freely giving away knowledge that you can only acquire by paying money on most other platforms on the internet.

    At the moment, there is an influx of "Big Brother with animals" channels in Science & Technology that isn't exactly doing the category a favor. It just feels depressing when you're a coder and you're trying to teach people the basics of Java or another language that powers the web and there's another channel where someone's live-streaming their rabbits making out and they have more viewers than you.
    It also doesn't exactly encourage you to try and keep going and share your knowledge.

    There are yet more sub-categories in Science & Technology like all the hardware enthusiasts that are building computers, working with Raspberry Pi-s, etc.

    I do not believe that these folks belong in the same category as "live from the ant farm".

    In other words: Twitch has a unique opportunity to present itself as the ONE PLACE on the internet where you can pick up coding knowledge without paying money. Where you can interact with a livestreamer and start to really understand how you can make a living by applying knowledge that you can acquire while watching the streams. To accomplish the same thing on udemy or Skillshare or similar platforms, you have to pay money.

    It's time that the Science & Technology category gets the treatment it deserves and becomes a place where you can really exchange ideas and learn about, well... science & technology. Not watching rabbits making out.

    As djWHEAT mentioned in one of the new streams, Twitch is welcoming new viewers who are on the site to watch non-gaming content like birds and NASA and whatnot

    Something that never left and appears to be having a bit of a growth spurt is people live coding on Twitch.

    Please could we get the Programming category added back? While I appreciate what the other folks in Science and Tech are doing.. it just ain't code. It's not the same content at all.

    It's not bad content -- it's just nowhere near the same category. I'm sure the scientists of S&T would agree that what I do is not really science.

    I'm all for this. This especially helps when searching for new channels and past broadcasts. Discoverability of live coding is tough everywhere on the internet, and this could give Twitch an edge, and at least signal that Twitch cares about the category. Would also be nice to have tags for languages/paradigms.
