Return the ability to show text in chat box instead of emotes/animated emotes
Having any more than a couple emotes causes my chat box to lag horribly with the new chat options. It would be nice to have a toggle in the options somewhere to turn off having embedded pictures in the chat box.

This change literally ruined my twitch experience. I thought it was due to addons, or an older PC, but with no addons and even on a brand new high end machine the performance tanks when spamming emotes.
Clearly this was a feature designed by people who don't actually watch and participate in popular twitch stream chats.
By the way, this is obviously something they could easily make optional or disable again, because if you use /me before the emotes it prevents the conversion process and is easy to spam, but since that makes text italic it isn't a perfect workaround

As a moderator for a singer channel, we were used to ask viewers to fill the chat with lots of emotes to show support and appreciation during songs.
With this new feature, we can no longer ask people to make this "emote rain" we loved.
On a personal point of view, I can't use more than 2 emotes without lag. Please consider letting us turn off this feature.

It looks like the feature has been improved: I have no longer lags when using multiple emotes. Let's hope it is not just because I am using a screen with a smaller resolution -

I agree with this as well, there should be an option to choose between this new chatbox and the normal text input for writing in chat.
It starts to lag pretty bad the stream, the whole page, the longer I stay in a stream, specially when I paste emotes into it (texts also do it too but less). Sometimes it takes 1 second or so for each emote to be added from a copy paste and I have to stay there waiting for it to finish to be able to send the message, even when using a high end computer.
It really impacts negatively and heavily on the user experience, and more so for those that can't afford a high end computer to watch streams. -

Also it's just not possible to tab/autocomplete and attach e.g. an _HF on higher sub tiers anymore. Which is a big issue to me.

Yep. Just had it roll out to me today and it's a nightmare. Lags my typing-to-text response in the chat box and half the time when using tab/autocomplete, it brings up twitch global emotes that vaguely share the same letters as what I typed rather than the bttv emote that matched exactly. Sometimes it deletes the message I was typing prior to tab/autocompleting the emote, since it takes a random word/letter earlier in the message as the emote name.
I'll definitely be limiting my use of twitch emotes until this is sorted.

Yes, this is really annoying for those of us used to typing out emotes or using tab complete extensions. I'm willing to bet it doesn't play well with IME or screenreaders either, as well as the lag issues. (Wouldn't surprise me if it also causes some layout/clickable area issues I've seen occasionally since it was enabled for me, but can't be sure about that.)
This kind of thing literally causes me to chat less, because the text box drives me crazy. At the very least, I'll avoid Twitch emotes.
