[MERGED] Bring back colored /me chat messages + Update the /me command to color chat messages FOR MODS/BROADCASTER ROLES ONLY
Or at least give streamers the authority to enable or disable it. But the ENTIRE point was how it stood out with color. Plain black with italics just renders it useless.
Hey all,
Thank you for the patience with us on this. This has been one of the most popular ideas on UserVoice and we definitely heard your feedback.
Today we launched /announcement for mods and streamers. Announcements can be used in chat to highlight a message and are available in 4 different colors along with the channel accent color. Because this is only part of the ask of this idea we are setting this idea to partial release so the community can continue to leave feedback on this.

We could bring /me colored text back, and instead highlight donation messages in a way that can't be faked if that's an issue (i.e. like how points messages can have animated emotes and nothing else can, or give donations a special emote or image, or a special border, or something else)

I disagree with the original poster, and pretty much everyone in this thread. Twitch's original decision to show /me as a colored line has always been an odd decision, considering how every single other messaging system implements it (usually italic).
This has lead it to be very abused by most people who don't realize that /me is an old command from IRC meant to indicate an action ("/me goes to the kitchen to get pizza"), and nothing else. That's all it is.
Instead, people have been using it to highlight messages by giving it a splash of color — which is great, but that's just not what /me is meant for.
But I can't blame the users, because it's obviously only because of the original Twitch implementation (a colored message) being a little unconventional.
While I don't know exactly why the change was made, I am guessing abuse can easily happen exactly *because* colored messages stand out so much. In other words, I'm guessing the change was made to prevent toxic people from posting horrible things highlighted in color.
This leads me to a relatively obvious suggestion to how this could be fixed:
1. Keep /me in the new italic form.
2. Create a new /highlight (or /color, or similar) command that can only be used by mods/streamer/VIPs that creates a colored message. This would make the purpose more obvious, hopefully restore the original intended use of /me over time, and prevent toxic people from using colored messages.
The only inconvenience would be to adjust all bot command responses to use the new command instead of /me. But again, if you ask me, they should never have used /me to begin with anyway.
My two cents.

If nothing else make it an option to use colors instead of italic. No reason that can't happen.

I would love to see an explanation, why a text displayed in color perpetrates abuse more than the same text in italics. I mean... it's the content, not the style, that is abusive...

Just fully reverse the mistake that was made...and ADMIT that a mistake was made. Bring back /me color for everyone...full stop.

This really looks like an emergency shutdown of the /me feature without time to present an alternative way for streamers/mods to highlight messages. Hopefully there will be an alternative feature soon for that.

I think that the /me in color should come back, it was perfect to Show viewers and also me as a stream messages from the bot or important Massagen from Moderators, please bring it back.

may i ask how does it "perpetrate abuse against members of our community." i have NEVER seen it used for anything too bad other then the dummies who "try (AND MASSIVELLY FAIL MAY I POINT OUT)" to do fake donations.

the reason why they want to do this is to FORCE people to pay for Twitch Turbo OR Twitch prime. they want to make us pay for something that helps ALOT of people read chat :(

If what @Pubtest is saying is true and this is partially because people mistook /me messages for donation messages, the changes are ridiculous. Inform your streamers that this can happen. Try to educate people. Education is the best way to prevent people falling for things like this in the future.

Twitch are being trolled by 4CHAN into thinking /me was be abused by hackers, and they stupidly fell for it. Idiots
Then a few ill-informed streamers thought that a donation message coming from viewers, and not their designated bot, was real. Idiots
Twitch should have taken the opportunity to up-skill streamers, and streamers should have properly moderated their channels. But instead Twitch decided to **** its bed.

How was the colored /me command used to abuse someone? Please elaborate on this.

I agree with the opt-in for any changes.
This change should be reverted asap, and any future changes should be by a specific selection by the Streamer/Mods.

This needs to be available to more than just moderators, this should be a per-channel option or better yet, an opt-in per channel for those that want the italics style.

Just revert the change.... Literally not a single person anywhere ever asked for this.
