Remove the terrible persistent overlays that take up a significant portion of the screen on the mobile app
So it turns out this is in fact not a bug, but a feature… LOL. I submitted a support ticket on it - asking them to please tell me this was not another “incredible new feature to fix what isn’t broken!” And this is the response I received:
Hello [Username],
I understand your concerns about the changes of the chat overlay off.
We are constantly trying to improve the application and understand how frustrating things can be when things change or don't work right.
We need passionate users like you to share your feedback on our UserVoice. Ideally, it would be best practice to support any existing ideas that may be relevant to your suggestion by voting on them and adding a comment, if you'd like to expand on it a little more. This helps us collate feedback and better understand what is important to you (and our community as a whole), so we can prioritize what to consider as we're further developing and improving our products.
UserVoice forum links: Mobile (in general) | Android | iOS *
I do want to let you know that I have passed this information along to the appropriate teams and developers for further consideration; however I still want to emphasize that voting on existing ideas, and proposing your idea via UserVoice helps! Your feedback is important, as it helps create a better experience for everyone!
Thank you again for your time, and for reaching out. Please reply to this email if you have any further questions!

Twitch please give us the control over the use of these buttons. But also having buttons forced visibly in FULLSCREEN is a terrible idea, especially if they are not removable. It is disturbing and I don't enjoy watching twitch streams on my phone anymore. It's sad

Please for the love of God make the icons optional. I hate having them in the corner all the time. I will be using a third party app to watch Twitch streams until this is changed.

Posting this comment again as this thread keeps getting attention:
By the way for whoever comes across this, just delete the app permanently. Frosty works great for iOS and has bttv and 7tv integrations natively. If you miss that you could exit the app and a stream would keep playing in the background automatically (like I did), you can set up an automation on iOS easily. I get an email whenever a comment is posted on here so let me know if you need help with that. You can comment on here and I’ll dm you on twitch (on my desktop lmfao). But yeah, of all the alternatives, I’ve found Frosty the best by far.
These stupid overlays became a thing in like July iirc so I don’t expect them to revert back any time soon (if ever). The developers just progressively make the app worse and worse with each major update (that forced TikTok feed of 2024, LOL) so I’m just not bothering with using an app made by developers who don’t even use or watch twitch.
I finally spoke to an actual human after getting many automated responses and they admitted they did not have the rationalization behind the change, and then that it was supposed to provide an “intuitive and easy way” to show information so I don’t really know wtf is going on. I don’t think they really know what is going on. All I know is that these forced overlay buttons are the least intuitive change they have ever made and it absolutely boggles my mind that anyone could think covering up sections of the screen permanently would ever be a positive thing that people would want.
Props to the dev who’s innovative idea this was for really “thinking outside the box”.

I'm going back to watching streams on YouTube now, the buttons in full screen portrait mode breaks the immersion and is a deal-breaker.

Not working on 27.4, France region too, @wint even with what you are talking about, still the 4 icones present in any configuration
I wouldn’t be surprise if they released A/B testing on this anyway, so might be why people have it and other don’t
I didn’t watch twitch for almost 1 month since I uninstalled the app, and it’s a good thing in the end, youtube is way better at UX and it event push me to take YT premium
But I still cannot understand how anyone at Twitch user experience can think it was a good idea to add a permanent icon in a full screen stream/video -

@Zladk0 I'm on 27.4, US region. Let me clarify, chat overlay functionality is still present but can be turned off.
1. Open stream in landscape mode.
2. Open "Options" by touching Cog icon in top right.
3. Uncheck "Chat overlay".Now double tapping will only switch between "Column Chat" and "No Chat" modes. Previously "No Chat" mode would still overlay 4 icons but not anymore.

@wlnt Not sure what region you’re in but as of 27.4, our delightful user engagement optimizations are still (somehow) present for Canada.

This appears to be fixed and icons are hidden now. At least on iOS.
