Extend Clips API to provide the MP4 url so editors can automate downloads
If I have an oAuth that represents a User, where the User is either
- the broadcaster the clip is of
- an editor of the channel that the clip is of
- the user is the owner of the clip
And I make a request for a Clip as documented: https://dev.twitch.tv/docs/api/reference#get-clips
(but with the bearer naturally)
The JSON Response should include the direct link to the MP4 or an ability to download the Clip.
This is off the back of the removal/deprecation of some undocumented API's that I was using to get the MP4 URL for automated download for creation of clip reels and similar.
A dedicated "Get Clips Download" API endpoint has been added as an open beta and is expected to be generally available (i.e. stable with no further changes) in two weeks. More details are available in the announcement: https://discuss.dev.twitch.com/t/get-clips-download-twitch-api-endpoint-now-available-in-open-beta/64334

The whole point of clips is to help grow a community and get people watching. Isn't that what Twitch wants?

Clips are intended to be shared. That's the whole point of having clips. No matter if it's in a shoutout player or on socials or elsewhere.
In 2025, having to fight workarounds every few months to optimise the process is ridiculous. Twitch, please just provide us a download url.
Make it a dedicated API that returns a link that's valid for 5 mins if needed. Just stop denying us access to our content.

The only way embedding clips is with an overlay that shows up for a few seconds inclusively a seekbar. Also imagine using this as part of a random clip player (for shoutouts i.e.) - you first have to login with your OBS browser, then click the accept button upon the first clip. Twitch, please give broadcasters and viewers the ability to embed their clips without overlay that ruins the user experience.

Definitely annoying that I get the "Content warning" message pop up. I'm playing my own clips, not some rando watching my clips! FIX THIS TWITCH!!!! Also, this ---> https://app.streamotive.com does not work either. It just cycles through blips of your clips no matter the settings up pick. So don't bother.

@DraleZero There used to be a simple way to map thumbnail URLs directly to the mp4 URL, even if it wasn't provided directly.
The old way:
const getClipLink = clip => `${clip.thumbnailUrl.split('-preview-')[0]}.mp4`;Been a while since I looked into the details, but recent changes added an additional handshake on page load that specifically breaks direct linking and requires an additional "playback access token" in the URL for it to be directly accessible. Pretty sure they knew what they were doing.

Still a major issue for people that want to promote Twitch-based content. Providing a reliable API for this feels like a no-brainer for a site that thrives on content promotion for maintaining viewership and subscriptions.
You could previously access clips from pre-November 2024 using the old API, but they broke that a few months after the original breaking change.
You can technically work around it using the undocumented GraphQL API with a Client Integrity token and Playback Access Tokens, but it's considered reverse engineering and breaks Twitch ToS. If you use someone's implementation for this, be aware that it could be shut down at any time.

Dan acknowledge the issue on live Patch Notes today. Said they didn't have a dedicated mp4 so isn't sure what broke it but will "look into it". We been asking for it since 2019 at least though with this uservoice.

Everyone that got it “working again” are just abusing the Twitch API, again. This is not a solution.
We need an official API. So Twitch is happy, the developers are happy, everyone happy!

I can't believe the clip player is broken. It's such an essential feature for most streamers. It has been 2 weeks+ since this got broken. Really what we need is a dedicated player for clips, but the least Twitch can do is fix the API

twitch-shoutout.pages.dev and twitch-clips-player.pages.dev still work for now and are free to use. They are not "quick" due to the way that the clips now need to be pulled. But that's where we are at with this.

Another vote for this. Playing random clips is a significant part of my content that I now can't reliably use anymore. Please build something stable we can use to call up clips on stream!

Guys,I found that twitch guru does still indeed work, tested it on my own stream. The free is a basic shout out but 4.99 lets you customize it and also gives access to all the other pretty cool tools it has.
