[MERGED] Bring back colored /me chat messages + Update the /me command to color chat messages FOR MODS/BROADCASTER ROLES ONLY
Or at least give streamers the authority to enable or disable it. But the ENTIRE point was how it stood out with color. Plain black with italics just renders it useless.
Hey all,
Thank you for the patience with us on this. This has been one of the most popular ideas on UserVoice and we definitely heard your feedback.
Today we launched /announcement for mods and streamers. Announcements can be used in chat to highlight a message and are available in 4 different colors along with the channel accent color. Because this is only part of the ask of this idea we are setting this idea to partial release so the community can continue to leave feedback on this.

Bring it back but put the desision in the streamer if they want it or not

The /me command is really, really important for Mods and bots , the new italics are actually harder to read than normal chat messages and are overlooked more often.

On a recent Twitch stream, Joanne Soo (Snr Product Manager, Chat) said that /me was being used to put people "sometimes in physical harmful situation".
Joanne twice refused to expand on what this meant.
Here is a link to the Twitch Channel VOD with Joanne Soo talking about /me ...
https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1005166215?t=00h41m00sMy opinion is this is complete garbage. I would challenge Twitch to provide just 1 real situation, and the use of 'sometimes' to mean more than once is a joke.

Hello Guys,
i agree Twitch should bring back the /me Function. #ColoredMe
Problem on our Chat is that we do most of our Commands in /me Function. Without this function the Commands will not pop out in the Chat.
PLZ bring this Function back asap ;)

This request for Twitch to restore the /me feature has 4337 votes, which makes it the 4th top active issue on this forum.
Twitch has failed to respond to various media requests for information.

There's nothing I can say about the change itself that hasn't already been said perfectly well a hundred times now.
However, changes like this (and the ensuing backlash over the many things you did not take into consideration) really underscore the need for Twitch to grow up as a design organization and learn how to conduct UX design research properly, instead of changing things based on your own best guesses internally.
You could've learned from hundreds or thousands of your own users telling you this was not the right move, if only you'd had a process in place for asking.

changing an avenue that trolls use will just make them find another. And some people have trouble reading and keeping up with chat at the best of times. Italics just makes it worse as you have to adjust your brain to the new font.
Figure out a way to stop the trolls without breaking a good thing. -

I visibly cringe every time I notice the non-coloured /me commands. Which is only decreased by the fact that I don't always notice them because they look exactly like the rest of the chat. Fix this now.

You're not stopping the abuse of the /me command like this, as it will still happen and will probably get missed more often then seen now that it's the same color as normal text, just in italics. This doesn't help anything.
Also as someone who lives with Red/Green Colorblindness the /me messages being the same color as the user has NEVER been an issue!

I feel like the only people the prior implementation of /me would confuse are streamers who don't understand how their own bots work.
The new implementation only makes things MORE confusing, not less.

hubbaherbba commented
Just make it an option that is turned off by default so inexperienced streamers aren't confused.

For many mods it was very useful. For me it was a fun and unique feature on twitch chat. Why not make it optional?
There are already many ways for mods to prevent abuse. I don't see how this helps.

The solution to this is simple, if you really think it goes against the safety principle of the Twitch community, then make it a streamer-based option. The streamer decides whether or not it is on/off.
Otherwise it was NEVER an issue in any stream I ever watched, so this change HAD to come from some "important" creator that requested it.

Personally, I would have chat in /me permanently, as a streamer the colours help separate messages.. even tho it would add its own confusion!
It makes chat look nice and adds some character to the stream.
Knowing that my bots show up as /me for an important message helps make a point.
It helps to annotate an emotion or action, this is a fun human trait that is missing from text-based communication.
It's a thing that twitch has and no other place offers and everyone from my stream and any others streams love it too.So at the very least please offer a switch to toggle this on or off.
"we wanted to address the way this feature was being used to perpetrate abuse against members of our community"
The colour of the text won't stop haters hateing!
I can say the most horrific things with a smile! (do we ban smiles?)OPTIONS
- on/off /me command
- on for bots permanently -

Keep the color optional to the streamer. Let them decide if the option is available or not.

I'm sorry, but the concept of "/ me in italics" is the worst idea Twitch has come up with lately. We are a concept worthy of the early 2000s.
Ok Twitch, they want to make some changes, but at this point add a new command for italics and leave the / me in color.
It is the basis of all live to put real emphasis and allow the streamer to "skip" the message.

I fail to see how removing the color of the message deals with the problem of abuse, it only moves it away a tiny bit, as now abuse will take place through italic messages. The problem remains, and the chat is now less accessible to people with dyslexia, and less colorful too, which is pretty sad.
I've seen people mention color-blindness, just add a mode that sets the chat to black and white like some extensions already do.
If streamers need to deal with abuse, they can set up bots to detect those messages. Simple as that. Or alternatively, you could let the streamer choose which userlevel can use /me.
