Do not require a phone number to be a verified account
Do not require phone numbers to be a verified account.
I just tried to chat and because I do not trust twitch with my phone number, especially after they got all their data leaked, I couldn't.
I will not be giving it to you, this will quickly create a have and have not situation where people will be unable to join in with chats and thus leave your platform if they either do not have a phone or do not wish their phone number to be sold, given away, profited from or leaked.
Do Better Twitch!

Bro, Linking a really old amazon account with my home address and massive purchase history should count as verified why tf do they need my phone. Plus if I add my phone it can become and insecure second factor for authentication

I would be a fool to trust Twitch with yet more personal information, when at this point it is a matter of when, not if, it will all get leaked in some hack or other. On top of that, I do not have a mobile phone. I will probably never have a mobile phone. No amount of them telling us "we're just doing it for your security" or "it's to protect streamers" will make it ring less hollow. This is classism.

You shouldn't need a phone number to whisper when it lets you chat in streams, one of the most crazy things that happened in 2024! Verified chat is different as down to streamer their requirements.

I had this weird restriction applied yesterday and I made support ticket. Best case they lift it manually or automatically, worst case I don't use Twitch anymore and do other things in my spare time OR just make a new account. I have Twitch account for more than 10 years and I hope they don't think I feel forced to use Twitch AND provide the phone number - I won't. Didn't need for more than 10 years, don't need now.
If anyone is in similar situation, please share your findings etc.

This exists for one reason and one reason only, so that twitch can harvest phone numbers and sell your personal info for profit. There's no real reason that twitch needs your phone number and we've seen that these measures have done little to nothing to stop spammers or harassers. If you don't comply with it, twitch will force you to comply by revoking your ability to chat until you verify. Simply put, it's a scam.

I blame the requirements on Twitch partners in 2020/21, especially jillcrofts.

I know what you're talking about, I have had the same issues with using my phone number for verification but it's not an issue anymore since the temporary phone number providing services does exist and I always use it. Here is my latest favorite service I would like to recommend - https://anonymsms.com/

I stream and still find it very odd to be asking for my number. Maybe email I would give. I've never followed anyone asking for personal info.

In my case it was not the choice of a streamer. It was clearly a bug and was resolved later on - luckily. I couldn't type in any chat on twitch. The support was incredibly useless and had no clue about what was going on, even though I explained it clearly. Therefore, I am not suprised people are having issues with their old accounts blocking their phone numbers and the support is not helping.

I would consider this resolved.
Email and Phone verification is a choice of the streamer.
As for the comments regarding long standing accounts, the streamer also has a choice for this.
So a streamer is currently able to say "Must have phone number to chat, unless the account is 6 months old" for example.
Followage is also an exception streamers can make. So with proper config, streamers can implement email/phone verification for future followers/chatters while not affecting their current followers. -

I to will not be give them my phone number.
The end of twitch for me.
I would ask EVERYONE to do the same.
They just want your phone number so they can sell it. -

Given that phone-based verification is intended to inhibit undesirable behaviour, one would think that longstanding accounts without any history of infractions would be given the benefit of the doubt.
Someone who has used their Twitch account for years and years - and has not drawn Twitch's attention with misbehaviour in all that time - is surely not part of the problem this is intended to solve. -

I have no phone. Can't use Twitch-Chat anymore :(
Why? You do this?Twitch is a Computer/Browser Website, i see no reason why i need a mobile Phone Number for that? A safe E-Mail would do it.

I live in New Zealand and I have a phone, AND don't mind giving my number, but i tried 3 times and the text NEVER got sent to me? I suspect it's trying to charge my phone plan, which is (always always) empty. That means it literally costs you money to talk in verified-only chats?? that's *********.
PLEASE fix this, Twitch.

Yep, this is very stupid; I don't even own a smartphone, I don't intend to; I have been using Twitch for years and chatting in channels that now require that I verify with a phone--I can no longer chat. STUPID.

I don't trust twitch with my phone number from a privacy point of view. Twitch does not have a good track record for securing their data. Wont be chatting until this is gone.

I want to leave this here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Twitch/comments/uzv33e/the_verified_chat_issue/
Seems like its either a bug or Twitch is testing waters on blackmailing peoples phone numbers from them by limiting their options to chat. Considering the responses we all got from the customer support, it seems to be the latter.
