Develop and enact a policy preventing harmful charities from accessing Twitch's charity tool
Twitch's current community guidelines focuses behaviors that happen on site but many nonprofits do not stream or engage on Twitch. And becoming a nonprofit within the United States is relatively easy and affordable. FB, Google, and YouTube have stances against nonprofits that are discriminatory in nature or provide access only if the recipient of the program converts to their religion. Allowing nearly any nonprofit to be fundraised for through Twitch's charity product opens a new vector for abuse one that has serious real world implications given that money is involved.
The only reason for Twitch not to do this is they’re gaining financially from these hate groups.
Surely it shouldn't take THIS long to respond to an idea like this, right? Do you actually care, Twitch? Or are you content to assist people in funneling money to hate groups masquerading as charities just because they're "non-profit"?
When I heard that _thousands_ of charities were added, I figured there would be some sketchy or downright hateful and harmful groups added - and that turned out to be the case.
Twitch really needs to have some filtering and moderation tools here.
Really like this
I recommend those interested in this also view this suggestion. They're two sides of the same coin, if you will.
As someone with Autism that had their entire childhood be nothing but a nightmare thanks to the falsified information and ideals that Autism Speaks releases. It promotes hate towards autism but autism isn't a disease. It's a part of, and makes me who I am. So to fight autism is to hurt me as a person. You can not wash your hands of this and pretend you have done nothing wrong Twitch. If you truly care about your community then do the right thing and remove hateful/problematic charities like Autism Speaks.
When thousands of people from an affected community tell you about a hate group you listen. Don't ignore us and bury comments. Fix the problem.
Hi, commenting here too. If you're gonna provide a way to route thousands of dollars, maybe have a good verification system set up to make sure that you're sending money to groups that enrich lives.
Twitch can't even enforce its own rules, they have no credibility. Autism Speaks is a hate group and Twitch is an evil corporation that exploits children and promotes hate speech.
A plethora of autistics are telling you that Autism Speaks is a hate group. Listen to us.
FYI the charities you’re supporting are not charities. They’re hate groups.
Hey, stop merging these, and just change it. Listen to the people on this.
It shouldn't have taken 16,000+ votes to get you to review one charity and copout on your answer regarding Autism Speaks, or to not take any accountability for the charities allowed on your platform. "Inclusion does not mean endorsement from twitch?" Maybe not, but you're still allowing others to support harm by trying to put your head in the sand. As others have said elsewhere, it's remarkably easy to file for 501c3 status, and twitch as a platform needs to take ownership and accountability to review and vet the charities they allow as donation platforms BEFORE they're put on the platform, not after 16,000+ users tell you how harmful and hateful they are. Stop passing the buck and the blame on the paypal giving thing.
If you can't take ownership and accountability of this feature and be trusted to not cause harm, then you should remove it until you can that accountability. As it is, you've lost amazing amounts of trust in the vulnerable communities you claim to support already. Do better, be better, acknowledge your mistakes, and fix them.
Either don’t participate in fundraising for charities or develop a tool to screen nonprofits by the impact they have. “Charities” like Autism Speaks explicitly employ ableist hate speech and fund eugenics research. Charities like Salvation Army do achieve some good but also discriminate against protected classes for benefits AND engage in extensive evangelization while providing services which is coercive on top of not adequately protecting those receiving their services.
If Twitch wants to be part of the charity space, they need to take responsibility and make sure that "charities" and other groups that cause harm do not have access to fundraise through the charity tool. The service can't have it both ways, if you want to get into the space, there needs to be some work done on Twitch's side to make sure money isn't being used to harm instead of help.
Twitch needs to do better. Plain and simple. There is no way they can justify the platforming of harmful charities and pretend that platforming them doesn't equal endorsement. By allowing these charities to fundraise, they are actively giving them access to the funds and tools necessary to cause harm. They are complicit.
It is very clear through Twitch's platforming of the LGB Alliance (now removed) and Autism Speaks (still active), and potentially others, that simply following a list provided is not good enough. Organizations must be vetted more thoroughly to avoid platforming hatred and harm.
Regarding Autism Speaks, Cassandra Crossman does a fantastic job at detailing Autism Speaks' ableist history and eugenics-oriented practices: https://intheloopaboutneurodiversity.wordpress.com/2019/09/13/the-ableist-history-of-autism-speaks/
To mimic the sentiment of others, do not give Twitch your money. Cancel subscriptions. Refuse to use their on-platform charity system. Donate externally and support your favorite creators directly and elsewhere.
I'm an autistic streamer and Autism Speaks doesn't speak for me. Twitch's response to our concerns was absolutely unacceptable. It's good that LGB Alliance is gone now, but Autism Speaks should not be supported in any way.
Given Twitch's provided reasoning for their recent failure to remove Autsim Speaks, a "charity" which advocates for eugenics, a more robust policy is essential
With how many hate groups and for-profit think tanks are still on the list, and which Twitch is defending, it really cannot go without being said that Twitch having absolutely no policy standards for what kind of harm they allow to be funded through their platform is inexcusable.
At this point, I recommend cancelling all your subscriptions and when asked why, write that you are uncomfortable monetarily supporting twitch due to their fundraising on behalf of hate groups and eugenicists and their advocacy for the torture and neglect of vulnerable children, both trans and autistic.
