Proposal to Restore Core Global Features for Korean Viewers
Hi Twitch team,
It has been nearly two years since Twitch discontinued its local operations in South Korea. I understand that this decision was made based on business considerations and respect that choice.
However, I would like to propose a reconsideration of the regional restrictions that were implemented at the time of withdrawal and remain in place today.
Currently, Korean users appear to face the following limitations:
-Video quality capped at 720p, with no access to 1080p viewing
-Inability to create clips
-Restrictions on viewing certain clips
-Inability to purchase Bits
-Inability to subscribe to channels
As a result, viewers in Korea can watch international streamers, but with reduced video quality and limited functionality. More importantly, they are unable to directly support creators through subscriptions or Bits.
Even though Twitch ceased local operations in Korea, enabling subscriptions or Bits purchases for international creators does not appear to require local infrastructure or Korea-specific operational resources. In other words, discontinuing domestic business operations and restricting access to global monetization features seem to be separate issues.
It is also worth noting that before Twitch officially expanded into Korea, Korean users were able to access these global features without restriction. After the withdrawal, access has become more limited than it was prior to market entry, which is difficult for users to fully understand.
Additionally, some users reportedly resort to using VPN services to bypass these regional restrictions. This situation is not ideal for either users or the platform, as it arises from the absence of a straightforward and legitimate way to access standard global features and support creators.
Despite the closure of local operations, Twitch remains an important platform for Korean viewers who follow international streamers. Many users continue to actively engage with overseas creators and wish to participate as full members of the global community rather than as limited-access viewers.
With that in mind, I would like to suggest restoring at least the following core global features:
-Access to full video quality options, including 1080p viewing Channel -subscriptions for international creators
-Bits purchasing functionality
-Full clip functionality, including both creation and viewing
Separating local market operations from global participation features would allow Korean viewers to support creators legitimately while requiring minimal regional commitment from Twitch.
I would also appreciate clarification on whether these regional restrictions are permanent or subject to future review.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
