Disable Ambient Mode
I recently purchased the new chromecast with google tv, love it and love Twitch!
The problem is that using the twitch app on my TV routinely "times out" and sends the tv to ambient mode which shows pictures and the weather. I haven't been able to figure out how long it takes to time out but sometimes it seems like less than 10 minutes other times it plays for hours ... Might be stream dependent, but I am not sure what that would have to do with it.
I found some instructions on disabling the energy optimization I'm the chromecast app settings to fix this issue but that definitely did not fix it for me!

This is happening to me now, but has seemingly only started in the last week or so. Super frustrating.
Energy saving changes — either generally turning energy saver off or the specific per-app setting referenced in the reddit posts about this — don't seem to make a difference. Making suggested changes and restarting sees the issue go away, but then the next day it comes back again. So it's probably the restart that helps rather than the settings change.
Casting traditonally to google tv (i.e. not via the gtv app, but from your phone via chromecast) doesn't seem experience the issue, from what I've seen so far.

I'm experiencing the same issue, it is very annoying because I need to hit any button on a remote every few minutes to make sure I watch without interruption. Developers, please fix it.

I have the same issue and it's been reported all over the internet. There are multiple threads on Reddit about it, for example:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Chromecast/comments/j4k5yo/chromecast_keeps_going_into_ambient_mode_when/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=shareTwitch is the only app that does this.
