Allow certain VoIP phone numbers for account security
Currently, the Twitch platform advises that I provide a phone number to increase the security of my account, but the platform doesn't support VoIP numbers. The only phone number I have access to is a VoIP number. While not all VoIP services support receiving SMS verification/authorization messages, the one I use does. I understand the concern regarding allowing accounts to use VoIP numbers, including their adoption by bots and bad-actor accounts, but I also believe there are certain instances where their use should be permitted. Essentially, it's a user accessibility issue- some users are not able to afford the cost of acquiring a phone number from a major cellular carrier and perhaps they're using the Twitch platform as a non-traditional source of income to address that very issue. Also, often people use VoIP services to protect their privacy, not to hide bad behavior. Data breaches and unauthorized access to an account can expose someone's phone number to the public, which in-turn can be used to track a user's location, look up a user's personal information in other databases, or impersonate a user somewhere else. For those reasons, and more, often people prefer to use VoIP phone numbers to filter who and which services or platforms have access to their private carrier phone number, to protect their privacy.
I think there's justifiable reason to support certain ranges of VoIP phone numbers, if not every VoIP number, such as those from reputable VoIP services, like Google Voice, Pinger (TextFree), TextNow, Burner (Ad Hoc Labs), Nextiva, RingCentral, and Zoom Phone. I agree that not all VoIP services implement the same safe-guards to prevent abuse of their provided phone numbers to be considered trustworthy, but all of them aren't bad, and many good well-meaning people rely on them. You all should reconsider your stance on allowing the use of VoIP phone numbers for securing user accounts on your platform.
