Meet and Greet Line - Safety Rules Display/Announcement
To improve safety and comfort during TwitchCon Meet and Greets, there should be a designated staff member or volunteer that makes a short announcement before each session begins (to each individual line). If dedicated staff would be a problem, this could instead/also be a video that's played for each group on a monitor. The monitor could later be used to display the streamer name and their comfort levels (which would also cut down on waste since usually the streamer's name placard is discarded when the meet and greet ends).
This announcement would outline acceptable behavior, streamer-specific boundaries, and consequences for violations.
I've attended the last three years and in each of my experiences, there's been no clear guidelines expressed at the time of the session. Written guidelines at the time of reserving the time slot are often overlooked and completely ignored.
An example what would be included in this video/explanation to people in the queue:
- Whether hugs, handshakes, or physical contact of any kind is acceptable (great consideration for streamers with safety concerns, strict boundaries, or who may be immunocompromised)
- Whether photos, videos, or streaming are permitted (some folks may have different preferences)
- Any specific guidelines requested by the streamer
- Other guidelines/rules set by the safety team.
These clearly set expectations would make it safer for the streamers, and more clear to the con-goers what is an is not acceptable (leaving no room for ambiguity or interpretation).
The announcement should also make it clear that any violations of these guidelines will lead to removal from the line, the event and potentially further action depending on the severity of the behavior/violation.
This will:
- Reinforce a culture of consent and respect at the convention.
- Empower staff to take swift action against boundary violations by citing specific violations to their safety policies.
- Help attendees feel confident about what’s acceptable.
- Reduce potential incidents and discomfort for streamers.
This is a relatively simple policy to implement and would be a good-faith effort by Twitch to make streamers feel safer and to mitigate future safety issues.
