Cons: Twitch would become a repository of very detailed personal data for hundreds of millions of users, making it a very interesting hack target.

This would also be effective only if Twitch makes sure that the methods for establishing your account are not infinitely reusable - e.g. at most one account per 6 months or something should be allowed to be verified via a single payment method to your name, email addresses should be normalized (remove `+` parts etc.) and checked for uniqueness, and remove commonly known things like mailinator on a blacklist.

Additionally Twitch should monitor bans and if clearly one individual gets banned from multiple places quickly, all their accounts should be shadowbanned or similar from everything until some review establishes if they should continue to be on the platform at all or not.

This "Established" status should also extend to ability to host/raid as notices of those go in the chat, or at least disable the notifications from those in both chat and API level.

There could be other ways to get your account verified/established - connecting external accounts, phone verification, payment card verification, etc. .. anything that allows you to at least make it much more difficult to rapid-fire create new accounts every time you get banned.

It's pretty strange to comment "I don't think this solution solves 100% of all potential cases, so I don't think this is worth doing. I have better ideas, but I will not tell you about them."

If this solves even 50% of the cases it's a huge impact, and I would really expect that the vast majority of people will not go through the effort you described.

Also as mentioned below, there are multiple additional things that could be done to verify an account as "established", e.g. ID verification via Netverify.

For new users the impact is exactly the same as follower only mode. This is just a lot better than follower only mode at solving actual issues, and reducing damage to e.g. raids.

The "established account" could include other criteria as well, e.g. jumping through a few hoops to ensure the user can be truly identified in a unique enough way that they can then be effectively banned when they make trouble.

Unfortunately at this stage it seems clear that Twitch does not care about *solving* problems, they care about the *appearance of solving* the problems.

They add tools that do not solve the problem, and ruin the normal use of their platform, such as how follower-only mode ruins raids, but after several years this suggestion has been consistently ignored.

They're probably worried that new users will find it annoying that they can't instantly go and talk to some chats, but those actual new users will likely only go to the big channels and they're lost in the chat anyway so those channels would likely not care a whole lot about this feature. No point in worrying about such trolls there.

But the vast majority of streams on Twitch are not huge, and there one person can already do significant damage, and that's where this kind of a tool would have the most benefit.

Some ideas from elsewhere: "Established" could also require e.g. viewing X many hours of streams, following X many people, etc. .. something to show that the account is actually active and in use by a legit person
