As a disabled and immunocompromised streamer and artist, who just vended at the artist alley this San Diego TwitchCon, I would’ve felt abundantly safer with a mask mandate and cleaner air procedures in place for attendees. There should be air purifiers stationed around the convention center as well as PPE (masks, sanitizer, tests, etc.) available for folks in need. I brought my own portable air purifiers, masks and even handed out masks.
COVID and other viruses are detrimental to everyone’s health whether they’re considered a vulnerable population or not. A healthy person can develop Long Covid after their first infection and asymptotic people can spread the infection as well so as much as advocating for choice or “mask recommendations” sounds positive, it actually is extremely risky and makes the event inaccessible. People with be bringing COVID and other viruses with them unknowingly so the least we can do is mitigate the spread to the best of our ability. That starts with enforced masking for everybody that can physically wear one and providing clean air for everybody and especially those that actually cannot mask up (there are conditions that make masking impossible or unsafe for some.)

Being in community with other disabled people has been my main support and resource for streaming sustainably and making a career and passion of streaming not just a hobby! A Disabled Creators Guild would be monumental for so many of us disabled streamers in building intentional communities and events on Twitch. 🩵

This is the year! Please, Twitch. You’ve got so many of us asking you—big and small, partners, affiliates, chatters, etc. We all want to see disabled creators get highlighted for our excellence!

Response to the most recent comment: Disability Pride Month is the official name of the commemoration of Disabled people in July since 1990 because of the anniversary of the ADA. It’s not random. One individual not feeling pride in their disability is valid but it doesn’t negate that many do and should be free to do so.
