Actually... side loading S0ound TV is the answer. Finally looked into it and it's pretty good. The interface seems a bit glitchy, but the features look to be all there... Can stream at full quality, can see and interact with chat, have full prior stream history... Winning!

@DarkerDarock, I don't think it has anything to do with Amazon vs Google or anything like that. I think they are just trying unify their technology stack, and willing to upset and inconvenience their user base to do so...

Most will just adjust and put up with the worse application, and they know that (I'm a Product Manager for an web service/product, myself... I get it).

The part of all this that upsets me the most is the loss of video quality because of whatever additional overhead now exists in this consistently worse version of the app. I literally can't stream 1080p over twitch on my 4k capable Fire Stick in the new v10+ app, where I could in v9. And I know it's not my internet, because it's fine in other apps, and not an issue on my Fire Cube in a different room. And it's getting worse, I'm watching an eSports match right now that can't even maintain 720p live. And what's my recourse...? Buy new FireTV hardware... And I just might do it because I'm sick and tired or putting up with it.

These are the reasons capitalism gets a bad wrap.

Glad I'm not the only one who noticed the search results seem to prioritize suggested live content over the ACTUAL search results, even in the case of searching for the exact channel name.

I cannot fathom the decision making that went into that design choice. I can only assume Twitch makes more profit on live content vs VOD content, and so they are attempting to prioritize it over others. And while I can appreciate the profit motive there as a capitalist myself, THAT'S NOT HOW YOU DO IT.

Provide us with a better product than you did previously, and a superior product compared to your substitutions and you will have customers... Don't inhibit access to our preferred content and oppressively nudge us into your more profitable offerings when we've clearly indicated we want something else. That's a really Really REALLY good way to destroy your customer base.

This new app is such a pain to deal with, and whether I'm correct about the motives that drove these changes or not, it makes me feel like Twitch lacks respect for me a customer. So thanks for the continued motivation to watch less Twitch and more YouTube and other content platforms.

Just to again quickly and easily summarize all the feedback from this post and it's comments, two words:

    Feature Parity.

I understand true feature parity can't be maintained, and is a poor design principle to blindly adhere to, but there is no possible way that Twitch even remotely came close to any sort of 80/20 rule-esque approximation of the functionality available in V9 vs the mess that is V10.

Also, may just be me, but it seems like the new app can't consistently stream at high quality (i.e. 1080p60) vods. I've checked my internet and my down speed is >50Mbps, but when I try to stream any nl_kripp vod rn, I have to limit it to 720p60. Otherwise, it rebuffers every 10-15s, eventually locking up completely while attempting to buffer. On the other hand, Quill18 vods... 1080p60 all day no problem, even right after or before failing at the nl_kripp stream.

Admittedly, this is kinda similar to behavior I had in V9, but it's worse now because I can't get around it. In V9, after a while the app wouldn't want to fast-forward, rewind, or load a new stream (if I interrupted what was currently playing), and would just sit there buffering. My fix there was to force close the app and relaunch it, sometimes restarting my FireTV stick, but that's not working with V10.

I had assumed my woes with V9 we're due to crummy FireTV stick hardware, since I didn't have the same issues on our FireTV Cube, and it was across the app, regardless of streamer/vod/quality. But I don't feel like I can say the same here, since my V10 issues are inconsistent between streamers/vods/quality. Additionally, I never had inherent issues streaming 1080p content vs 720p content in the past. So it feels like it's related to the new app more than my hardware setup... Haven't streamed enough on my Cube to confirm any issue there, or if it's just an issue with V10 on Stick, IDK. And if the overhead has been increased with V10, and the app can no longer consistently stream 1080p60 content of FireTV stick hardware, when it could in V9... Seems like a bad update.

Regardless, the ugliness of 720p playback on my 4k TV is just more reason to avoid Twitch right now. 🫤

I've been checking back on this, and it looks like mods are consolidating like feedback together, yeah? Some of my comments in similar posts look to have been moved here, and their respective OPs seem to be removed, not 100% sure. (Either way, I've deleted the additional comments, since they just clutter things up at this point.)

Nice on the one hand to consolidate feedback, but I know I definitely missed a few things here and there on the feature parity front between V9 and V10. So feels bad if anything gets dropped as a result. Ultimately, I just hope the development team takes a hard look at the features offered in V9 vs what is now (no longer) available in V10 and starts quickly resolving the vast gap in functionality.

I just realized the app now also only pulls in the last twelve most recent vods. It's not X amount of time... It's 12, just 12.

Why 12? Why can't I watch older content? I can on PC, I can on my phone. Can't confirm, but I'm pretty sure it was more than 12 in the V9 app...

Who thought any of this was a good idea?!?!?!

Glad I'm not the only one who feels this way about the update...

I originally submitted this feedback (with even less objective prose) via a customer support ticket, but I quickly realized that was the wrong channel for the feedback.

I'll just add that I give this feedback as someone who is employed as a Product Owner/Manager (SAFe Agile) for a user-facing software solution... And it abundantly clear to me that the people making decisions around the development and release of this software have a profound lack of understanding around how users seek to leverage their software. Or perhaps they were pressured into converting into new a technology or platform without ensuring adequate feature parity could be maintained. Either explanation is deeply concerning.

In the end, because of these changes, I have already found myself choosing other avenues of entertainment where I would have normally gone to Twitch. It was probably my first or second choice with the old app, but is now probably third or fourth in terms of priority.

PS (an additional complaint): It's really crummy that I get ads every time a load a stream, regardless of how recently I watched ads. Considering V9 was smart enough to NOT do that... it's really disrespectful to me as a content consumer. When I watch on PC, I consciously choose to not use AD blockers because I respect Twitch and content makers for the entertainment they provide and want them to be compensated. Please show me commensurate respect as a consumer. For example, in step by step: 1) I pull up a stream, immediately get ads and watch them. 2) I then join the stream and decide I want to comment on what's occuring. 3) Since I can't comment in the app anymore, I have to leave the stream and get a QR code to direct link to the chat with my phone. 4) And when I leave the QR code screen and rejoin the stream... More ads, despite just watching them moments prior; pretty sure I'm also watching ads on my phone too, just saying.

Honestly, if you're not going to allow in-app chatting. I would prefer just showing the live chat without the "Join the Conversation" button at all... It's not needed and just creates more ads for the viewer. The mobile app is very user friendly, containing near, if not all, the functionality that was present in the FireTV app V9 that is now missing in V10. The stream in question is easy to find and get to without the QR code.

Now, unironically, a QR code from the mobile app that links the FireTV app to a particular stream, vod, or profile... That'd be fantastic, given how awful the FireTV app's interface is now.

Oh, and along these lines... If you pause a VOD a big opaque play symbol pops up in the middle of your screen to, I guess, indicate that you've paused the video. But that indicator doesn't disappear with the rest of the UI after the 5 second fade out, why not?!? Why do you block our view of one of the most important sections of the screen when we pause? Do they not realize users might want to pause and look more closely at details (often in the middle of the screen) during an interesting or funny moment? The previous version of the UI kept the display nice and clear when pause, and this version has made that worse.

Moreover, what is even the point of that indicator? Is it not clear the video is pause be the lack of visual motion? If the streamer is transmitting a still shot during a portion of a vod, can't users easily pull up the UI to verify there're progressing through the vid? And if it's stuck on a frame and trying to buffer, we get a different indicator for both vod and live alike, that circular motion one.

It's not like it's telling you you must hit the play button to unpause (like you largely had to in the previous version). Now, for some reason, it unpauses with the press of any button whatsoever. So what's the point? We can tell the video is paused, and don't need a meaningless indicator, that never goes away, blocking key portions of the content.

Yeah, I noted this change (and many others) to the UI in my complains about the updated app (https://twitch.uservoice.com/forums/310225-twitch-applications-tv-apps/suggestions/44927404-rollback-the-firetv-app-to-v9). Really annoying that we have to wait 5 seconds for it to disappear when we could dismiss it in the prior version.

SO MUCH functionality was dumped when they 'upgraded' our experience...

The issue is that the 'upgraded' app can no longer prominently present users with ANY content that is not streaming live. If your followed streamer isn't live you have to search for them, as if you were looking up a streamer you don't follow and have never seen before. It's absolutely ridiculous and the decision makers clearly either didn't care, don't understand, or weren't allowed to prioritize feature parity with this redesign of the app. Really concerning...

FYI, I noted this failing and many others with the new app here as well:

Glad to see someone post about the glitchy and difficult to control playback controls. I made a similar post with a bunch of other complaints about the new version of the FireTV (https://twitch.uservoice.com/forums/310225-twitch-applications-tv-apps/suggestions/44927404-rollback-the-firetv-app-to-v9) but I was so put off by the myriad of other issues I didn't even get to experience and 'appreciate' the playback controls before voicing my feedback, and my edit window expiring.

Nice catch, and I'm personally glad you pointed it out!

I made a similar post with additional complaints. It has 27 votes as of writing this comment. Please up vote it as well so Twitch can't ignore these complaints!
