I 100% agree with this sentiment. There is very few ways to grow your community natively in twitch and one of those ways is gifting subs. Therefore if you have a small amount of people that gift large amounts of gift subs, these creators nor viewers should be penalized for gifted subs. I myself have hit over 100 gifted subs for 3 months consistently as a new creator and will likely not see a 60/40 split for months if not years, it isn't fair to small creator that twitch gets 50% of their income from loyal supporters who want to help bring new people to the channel by gifting subs rather than directly donating. It will and already has been discouraging people to gift subs to small creators when twitch pockets 50% even when they are getting hundreds of subs.
Was looking for this post. Lurkers not counting as viewers is a travesty to new streamers. Growing natively on twitch alone is nearly IMPOSSIBLE, lurkers give you a chance to boost your numbers from REAL people who may not always want to be listening to your stream but want to support in some way by having you open on another tab. It also shouldn't negatively impact streamers if their viewers don't want to chat, I think the OP has a good point about lurkers still getting ads but not counting as a view, if it doesn't benefit the streamer then why should a lurker benefit twitch?
