This experiment is now closed as the new mobile redesign is rolling out to all users. Thank you for all your feedback during the experiment. We released an update to respect your autoplay settings in the feed, muted the feed on open by default (you can adjust this in your settings), and added mute functionality directly to the feed to give you more control over your viewing experience. We also enabled PIP over feed and have been continuing to improve app performance since launch. Learn more about the new app on our blog and continue to share feedback with us on the improved experience in the mobile category on UserVoice.

Okay, I will get the stuff I like out of the way because there is not much.

First, I like that profiles and notifications are easier to select on in the new UI layout. Those were tedious to select on the old layout and I much prefer the new one. I only wish you make the icons bigger so my thumb doesn’t need to tap them so precisely.

Now on to the part I overwhelmingly do not like: the Home tab.

Firstly, I hate that as soon as I open the app a stream starts playing. The last thing I need is to open Twitch, a streamer starts screaming or talking loudly, and everyone around me hears it.

Secondly, most streams aren’t shot in vertical video and to make the Home tab play a horizontal video/stream like that is baffling at best. Just switch the video to horizontal when I pick a streamer to watch. Speaking of which..

Third, why not just let me select a stream from a list of streamers I follow that are live? You don’t need to automatically pick a stream for me, I am more than capable of picking for myself. This way I don’t have to be ready to mute my phone just for opening an app.

Lastly, and no offense, your algorithm sucks at picking things for me. I only know of one time it recommended me a channel I ended following and the rest I immediately left due to various reasons, like the streamer was absolutely annoying, or they were only trying a game once but they went back to a game I don’t like. These bad experiences alone make me want to never scroll because that sounds like a train of bad experiences.

If you really mean to help smaller channels get discovered, make it easier for a viewer like me to find them. No, just asking me to thumbs up and thumbs down a random thing without context and/or a way for me explain why I did or didn’t like it helps nobody. You have a tagging system already, so let me use those on your mobile app to filter and refine suggestions and maybe I’ll be more willing to check out someone new.

I cannot overstate how bad that Home tab is for me. It overshadows all other changes the UI has and almost makes me want to uninstall the app. If that’s what it’s like just walking through the front door, why would I go in at all? It’s repelling and does you and creators a disservice.

So summarize: Don’t just randomly play a stream/video when we open the app, switch to horizontal video when viewers select something, give us a list of followed and undiscovered streamers instead of forcing us to use a TikTok scroll, and let us have more control in not just how to find things but also on how we can explain why we did/didn’t like it.

I’ve never voted in these but my dislike of this new update has compelled me to do so. I do not want a bunch of blaring streams to start blasting my speakers when I open the app, and I also do not want Twitch to actively get in my way when all I want to do is watch the streamers I followed. It’s annoying and borderline intrusive.

Like somebody else said, if this is what mobile is going to be like, I’m uninstalling the app.
