In my mind, bits are one of key things that set apart Twitch from Youtube. The ability to easily micro-give gives small streamers a chance to earn a small amount, as well as for ordinary people to give small tips.
To give some relevant (albeit small data):
- I've had $1.16 in payouts so far from the "experiment" over the last month. And this was basically all from one user testing the button out to see what it would do.
- My average cheering payout was close to $5.00 per month the last few months (with a few in the $10's).
Again, I know, small time streamer, but the bits add up. Twitch, this is a failed experiment. It's time to end it.
