Getting users/streamers to care about copyright in music
As a music business student and variety/music streamer who's come across people who play unlicensed music on Twitch, I find this topic intriguing. It seems there are many people in the world who don’t understand the intricacies of copyright and if there was something we could do to better explain this to the public, that may help with reducing copyright strikes. Indeed, I often have users come in who are constantly pressuring me to play background music to make the stream more entertaining, but as a Mac user, my options are limited so I prefer to do without.
I personally didn’t understand any of it fully until I began studying this subject for my degree, and it can still be confusing, so it makes complete sense that others would not take it seriously. On top of that, Twitch is a platform that can be used from anywhere in the world, and different countries have different rules. There are many grey areas that have been brought up by past examples, time and time again.
Taking these factors into account, I can only assume that the majority who break these rules simply don’t understand or care enough about the inner working of music, rights, royalties etc. The only way anyone starts to care about something is when it personally affects them or someone they know personally. The next best solution may be to involve a beloved music artist that most people listen to, to explain in a short, educational video how this works, and how it affects OTHER musicians' incomes (most won't emphasise with a celebrity because they're well off so best to stick to talking about those who are just starting out, and how they're affected by it.)
I hope this idea/feedback is useful to you,
Corrina
