  1. Just like we have websites like Wikipedia and Wikia, Google Arts and Culture also have info pertaining to games.

This is very interesting but comes with a few issues, such as: The library isn't massive (right now) so not all games will have a link that can be added. In addition, they seem to separate for example the PlayStation and Xbox versions of the same game and then it will be hard to know what link to add where. We're going to hold off on this one for now, but could potentially be interesting in the future especially if the library grows.

  2. Is it possible to add Metacritic, PC Gamer and IGN review scores to every game?

  3. Hello

I noticed that there are so many Minecraft categories but none from the Minecraft Bedrock edition.

In general, this is my suggestion. An extra category for the Minecraft Bedrock edition. I'm from the Minecraft Bedfrock edition scene and because there is no category for which many of my colleagues stream Minecraft Bedrock edition only on YouTube and not on Twitch. It is even often said that the Minecraft Bedrock edition would not be wanted on Twitch and something like that. And I think something should change so that another community can find its place on Twitch.

  4. Seeing as though Roblox is starting to be a sort of platform for games as opposed to being just a game itself, I think it would make sense to categorize games that run under Roblox (such as Bad Business, Phantom Forces, etc.) separately from Roblox itself. This is purely for game-tracking purposes in game-tracking services that use IGDB as their database.

  8. Currently the IGDB is only a database of video games but is the canonical source of twitch's game list. It should include all games if it wants to be called the IGDB and not IVGDB. This includes board and card games that do not have a digital version. This choice on the data front results in non-digital games all having to be lumped into the broad board game category and having to push for individual inclusion. Either make all video games jump through the same hoops or make IGDB live up to its name.

    Hey there!

Understandable about the naming expectation, but i can confirm that at this point in time, and the near future at least IGDB is strictly focused on video games.

    Few reasons for this:
    - Coming up with video game taxonomy to set industry standard is already a monument of a task, and it makes sense for us to narrow down this goal by excluding board games, card games and other physical types.
    - Twitch does have some very unique use cases beyond video games, which is why there is a distinction in being the database that powers Twitch’s gaming need, rather than being Twitch’s database itself. Our data being used by many more services than Twitch alone, we remain focused right now on video games.

It’s totally possible that in a long term vision we start tackling taxonomy of non-video game products, but likely not in the near future…

  9. Games' ratings may be skewed or conflicting if they have wildly different ports.

For example, "The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning" has its console ports, which are fundamentally the same, but it also has a 2D side-scroller port for GBA, and an isometric port for DS; both vary greatly (especially the GBA port) from the console release. Another example is Shrek 2, where the PC port is effectively an entirely different game from the console ports (and the matching PC port was called "Shrek 2: Team Action!")

Metacritic already separates game ratings by every port, and imo that's how…

    Hey there!

You are 100% correct on this :) We would consider the GBA, DS, and DS releases as Ports in the sense they deserve their own pages on IGDB so they can be rated & reviewed individually.

This is indeed a perfect example for ports. In this case it’s simply that we haven’t got around to split the releases and clean up the data.

Thanks for pointing it out, we’ll get right on it!

Dropping the link to our guidelines Ports just in case as well: https://github.com/twitchtv/igdb-contribution-guidelines/wiki/Game-Types

  10. Since there are reasons for duplicated not been removed quickly, I suggest providing a way to quickly link from a duplicate to it's original. I.e. Game Type as duplicate. This would have the added benefit of adding duplicates to the standard changes queue

  11. Several games have interesting or obscure caveats in terms of their release or their playability, and it's worth mentioning them for the sake of completeness. For example, Donkey Kong Junior is listed as a Gameboy Advance release, which is technically correct, but it was only playable via the e-Reader, which is not obvious. Additionally, Donkey Kong Junior also exists as a playable game within Game and Watch Gallery 3 and 4, which may technically not count as a release but deserves mentioning somewhere. There are several examples of games with unique scenarios like this, and this data doesn't really have…

Hey! This is excellent, we ourselves have been wanting Triva data for a long time. Although this isn’t a high priority data it would offer a lot in terms of general knowledge.

However this is a difficult data to handle, as verifying it can be quite difficult and time consuming. Eventually we will revisit the concept and see what options we can come up with to faciliate this.

Leaving this ticket open if other users have suggestions, such as sources of gaming trivia that could be researched.

    Thanks!

  12. Allow a link to a theme song (or theme songs) for a game. For example a direct link to a song.

Heya! This could indeed be interesting, however there’s a lot of possible legal investigation to look into when it comes to music copyrights.

In the short term it’s hard to say how we could approach this. Long term we of course would love to expand our data and game info with music, sounds like an obvious fit!

  13. There are many games that ended up becoming a different game, or with prototypes so different from the official release that deserve a main entry in the database, but now there's no right way to link them (the datatypes now don't match this description, and the versions are likely to be used only to editions). A few wxamples:

    EarthBound 64 / Mother 3
    Gimmick Land / Tomato Adventure
Donkey Kong Racing / Sabreman Stampede
    Rayman SNES / Rayman

  14. There could be a way to link a game to another as a sequel or prequel, what would be good for game series like Metal Gear and The Legend of Zelda, for example. In the game page, there could be a place saying "Sequel to "game X" and "Prequel of "game Y".

Hey! we had a chat about this internally and landed on the fact it could become problematic, so we wanted to double check your suggestion in more details.
How would we define the order within a series? As this could be seen either as chronologically by release, or by story.

For example, MGS3 being the first one in the story, yet the 3rd one by release date. This could prove very divisive either way.

Another issue that could be problematic are differences in the order by region. Final Fantasy is an infamous case, where FFVI was released as FFIII in North America for example.

Was this the sort of approach you had in mind with such a feature? Let us know :)

  15. Add information about if a game is on/included in a subscription service.

Such as gamepass or stadia (included with the stadia sub)

And if a removal date exists (as games will leave gamepass)

  16. Hey!

Seeing that there are already both screenshots, and Artworks it would be great to also be able to add game logos.
I make covers often from official artworks so I usually end-up downloading transparent logos at the same time anyway.

    Thanks!

Hey! yes this is a great suggestion, we’ve definitely been wanting to expand our Game Media coverage with logos.
    Especially for PressKits for example.

    Hey Barry!
Yes absolutely this is planned. While External Games and External Websites are separate they are closely related and may tackle them together.

For External Games this will be a big focus for us going forward.
    Stay tuned!

  18. I feel like there should be a general category for certain series. Such as Zelda, Mario, Megaman, RE, Digimon all under one catergory instead of individual games(unless they are a new). IGDB already implements this under what they call "Collections."

What do you think? People who play older titles but are a part of said series' community would be more in their line of audience. It's better than having them spread out in random places like Retro or Just Chatting. So instead of having massive communities around certain games, whether they are thriving or dying, you can have a continuous…

  19. As I was in the process of adding a game to the database, I was shown a list of fields into which I could enter URLs to that game's pages on various stores (Steam, GOG, Epic, etc.) but there was no URL field for the Microsoft Store. Why? The Microsoft Store has to be one of the most popular digital game sources. When IGDB adds a field for a Microsoft Store URL, I will edit the game's entry on IGDB to add a link to that game's Microsoft Store page.

Heya! Thanks for the suggestion, definitely a good one.

As a matter of fact we have plans this year to introduce stores, and possibly linking them to “Platforms”. You are correct that windows, XOne, X360 etc.. all have different stores so they would need separate implementation.

    Stay tuned!

  20. I think System requirements tables based on official minimum and recommendations specs for PC games is very useful and important. It's a must have feature that will be used by a lot of users! :)
