Mask Requirement for TwitchCon
After the surge of COVID cases after TwitchCon EU it was incredibly surprising to see the lack of mask policy for the event and makes many of us incredibly concerned about TwitchCon NA. Many other cons that have gone without a mask policy have only exacerbated the COVID cases where cons like PAX East, West etc have had much lower cases by having a strict mask policy.
We hear you and take these concerns seriously. In response to all of your feedback, we are updating our TwitchCon policies to require masks, as well as either proof of vaccination or a negative covid test. We will continue to review our health and safety guidelines along with local authorities in order to keep our community safe IRL at TwitchCon San Diego. Thank you for making your voice heard. More info is available here.
please require vaccination
PLEASE REQUIRE MASKS AND VACCINES AND ALSO COVID NEGATIVE TESTS!!
It's so obvious and CDC recommends areas with high spread (San Diego) should have indoor masking everywhere. So since you say you're following CDC, do it.
This further prevents equal participation of marginalized streamers and fans, particularly disabled and high-risk individuals, many of whom have found community and work on and through Twitch. Please protect our communities, the service workers in the surrounding area, and ensure that there is as much equity for disabled and high-risk participants as possible.
If you are reading this and if you know even ONE viewer or know even ONE of your fellow streamers, moderators, VIP that are planning to go to TwitchCon. Take a moment and reach out and ask them to vote.
I get that wearing masks will not be the perfect solution. It's about pragmatic mitigation to minimize the spread. Especially for a crowded event like a convention.
I am not allowed to get the vaccine at all but I would be able to provide a COVID-19 test and wear a mask. If I could I would get the vaccine but I can’t. I really am looking forward to possibly going to the convention but I believe it is important to keep not only streamers safe but also other people that aren’t content creators and it shouldn’t even be a question of masking requirements. For people who really want to attend the event but aren’t able to be vaccinated should at least provide negative COVID-19 tests and wear a mask. I think that is at least reasonable.
Star Wars Celebration and SDCC both required masks and proof of vaccination. Pretty irresponsible to not require either. At the very least, require vaccinations. Do you really want to be responsible for a break out? If this is about money just because a portion of Twitch users and creators are unvaccinated and anti-mask, that’s ridiculous to put that over people’s health especially with long Covid symptoms. Do better Twitch.
San Diego Comic-Con had both a vaccination/test requirement and a mask requirement and it in no way lessened the awesome experience we had at the event. Not requiring masks will make me seriously reconsider attending TwitchCon, and I was really looking forward to attending my first one as a Partner
Absolutely necessary. Mind-blowing that it was even considered that there shouldn't be a mask requirement. It only served to convince me that I shouldn't go and I should recommend my friends and others in Twitch chats I am in to not go.
Require the proper precautions of either testing before entry or masks and vaccines. Keep our streamers safe!
Require Masks or at least vaccination/ negative test result during the convention. Covid is still a thing
Despite loud cries from a small set of individuals ignoring medical consensus, masks have been a successful part of disease control strategy since the 14th century. Their efficacy has been proven time and time again, most recently with COVID-19.
This peer-reviewed meta-study covering a number of other studies on the effectiveness of different kinds of masks against COVID-19 concludes that masks are indeed effective against COVID-19 and recommends mask requirements: https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2014564118
With the current percentage of the population known to have COVID-19 in the US right now, a fully vaccinated person who spends 16 hours at Twitchcon (assuming there are an average of ten people nearby at an average distance of 6ft away at all times) has a .89% chance of catching COVID-19. Assuming the 2019 attendance number of 28000, that means 249 people will get COVID-19 at Twitchcon NA 2022.
Of those 249 people, a third will develop a long-term disability in the form of Long COVID. That's 83 people. Assuming all attendees are between 18 and 29 years old, one percent of those people will die, ~2-3 people.
If everyone wears surgical masks, the risk is reduced by a ratio of 1 to 8. That means 31 people will get COVID-19, 10 will develop a long-term disability, and there is a 30% chance of a single death.
If everyone wears n95 masks, but not properly, the risk is STILL greatly reduced, by a ratio of 1 to 18! ~14 people will get COVID-19, ~5 will get Long COVID, and there is only a 13% chance that even a single person will die of COVID-19.
You have the opportunity to prevent dozens of people from developing disabilities, and a few people from dying, and the cost is choosing to upset a small number of loud individuals who dislike how it feels to put a little piece of cloth on their face.
Please do not make the choice to cave to this loud and small group at the cost of the lives and well being of the people who you rely on to continue generating the content that Twitch relies on for its revenue. I guarantee that deaths and disabilities from this decision will be more impactful on your public image than a mask requirement will.
Thank you all for your continued votes! Please check out the other post under TwitchCon NA for Vaccines!

I love seeing the ppl crying for masks. Like if you wear one you’re all set. If you’re wearing one and someone else isn’t you will be fine. Stop telling ppl what to do just because you like being told what to do. If you’re sick wear a mask if you aren’t sick you don’t need a mask.
Please wear a mask if you are Attending Twitchcon. Lookout for this community. Thanks
I just got over covid and now I am going to risk getting it again and pay $229? cringe
With not only COVID but Monkeypox spreading fast its is incredibly irresponsible to remove that health requirements that you had in place. I believe that there should be a vaccine/negative test requirement as well as mask mandates. The facts are that you don't only have to think about the people that can get infected during the event but how fast it can spread outside of the event and become a huge outbreak. People have to travel home after the event and come into contact with a lot of people during that and can make them sick too. Think about all of the people that this can and will effect. Please do the right thing.
In the age of COVID and Monkeypox rising, making a mask mandate just makes sense. It makes good business sense. It makes ethical sense. Do the right thing.
Not only is Covid still a risk, Monkeypox is currently spreading. Masks in any event with more than one person should just be common sense for your fellow person. Even if you're Meh about it protecting you, it's more important to notate that you're wearing it to protect OTHERS. Don't be an ***. Mask up and have a good time.
