normalize Ad volume with content volume
Not as frequently as before but still often, Ads play which are dramatically louder than the broadcast content. This is an annoyance, interferes with other people in the house, and frankly makes me more likely to mute the ad and go do something in a different tab.
Normalizing volume levels with stream average volume or peak volume wouldn't take a huge amount of processing power and would fix the problem entirely. It's required by the US's FCC in other broadcast mediums, but it's really just a quality of life improvement for the viewers and a mark of good production.
A majority of ads on web and TV apps should now have normalized sound. We are still continuing the work on this and will update the status again when it is fully complete!

This is a huge problem on VODs. I often need to adjust the in player volume slider from 80% down to 5-10% to match ads to the content volume. I understand if there's a 3-6 dB difference but this is more like 18-24dB.
I often like to watch VODs while I'm working on other projects to relax and this audio shock really makes me hate your platform.
I don't have any issue with the amount of ads on Twitch but this needs to be addressed...like, yesterday.

This is not functioning properly currently on VODs. at least not on my system running the current version of Chrome

Many times watching a vod I have to turn up the volume to hear, and then my ear drums are blasted when suddenly there is an ad that plays. Either having the volume stay the same or have a brief pause to give me a chance to lower the volume so I don't lose my hearing. Thank you.

Or the ability to Report and Block particular adverts (Razer!) for excessive volume, etc.

its fun and engaging to have ads take up 100% of your sound space saturation when you're trying to do literally anything else, it's not painful, annoying or distracting in the least bit.
It's completely safe to be driving along on the highway, listening to a vod and have an ad come out of nowhere and ****** punch your ears into oblivion.
this certainly won't affect viewership at all, especially not newer viewers.to be completely serious, though, I really don't mind ads, unless they are either incredibly long, repetitive, ridiculously frequent, or straight up untruthful. but coming here from the competitor with the red play button (whose ads check all those boxes), even those ads are somehow preferable to some of the ear-ending ads on this platform. (looking at you, Razer)
otherwise, i actually enjoy some of the ads that are on twitch.
also sept. 9 was quite a while ago.

Ads have been increasingly loud for me, to the point where I have to mute them. I like supporting my creators and do not want to have to mute all the time. Please fix the ad volume so it doesn't burst my ear drums. It is a big reason I prefer Youtube.

This is really critical particularly for a gaming-oriented platform where people are using headphones, and also for rise in ASMR content that is headphone-oriented (talking about the quality sound-oriented ASMR not the 'thot on a bed' stuff). Last thing you need is to have headphones on and have some sudden high decibel blast from a hyperkinetic ad blowing out your ears. Fix it, please.

Ad volume is still far louder than any other content that plays for VODs. I often have to stop listening to streams. Your ad revenue is almost certainly negatively impacted by this issue.

Currently, many ads play at a very inconsistent sound volume. Some ads are as loud as the stream but many will be much, much louder.
While watching on PC with headphones, the discrepancies can be so large, that I have to turn down the volume during every ad break.
Some adverts are so loud, that it goes beyond a mere inconvenience or annoyance and I don't believe that it is in any way acceptable to have to face discomfort or even the risk of long term hearing loss just because some adverts are far too loud.

All it is going to take is someone to sue them for hearing loss/damage, then they will fix it. Guess I will just wait until the next one almost blows my eardrums out, and go to the hospital for a test. Seems ridiculous that people have to BEG not to get hurt by your company.

I am constantly providing feedback for ads that are either not in my interests or are eardrum-breaking loud and I see zero results.... ZERO. Please retrain whatever team is supposed to be monitoring these. I want to support the streamers I follow but their VODs are unwatchable.

AcrobatCat commented
Please please PLEASE fix this! These ads are making videos unwatchable!

Progress update please! Nearly a year since last "partial release" and so many ads are deafening. This is a terrible way to treat your userbase.

The crazy thing is they're already hijacking the RTMP stream to inject the ads, so it's not like they don't have something to normalise against.

There is one other possible explanation for why the twitch ads are still earsplittingly loud: Manipulating the viewers into subscribing to make the ads go away. I mostly watch channels I subscribe to, and so rarely see ads. When I occasionally watch a streamer that I'm not subscribed to, the super loud ads scare me half to death because I'm not used to them. Flip side is that I can't afford to sub to too many streamers, so I just stop watching those streams. I would be fine with watching some ads, it's the loudness that drive me away. Regardless, well done, twitch. Your ads make streams unwatchable to me.

Same. I guess Twitch makes more money for having their ads "stick out". That is the only rational explanation for why this is still an issue in 2021.

I've noticed while listening to twitch with the volume turned right down (but not muted) that the volume is boosted during ads. I can touch the volume control and the volume goes low again, so the ads are not just not normalised, they are being artificially made louder against the volume choices of users. This is dangerous and it is something twitch itself is doing via the player. Please just stop all this and protect our hearing!

It’s sad when the ads that are the worst about this problem are ads for Twitch itself. Fix this

I set my volume to a value that is acceptable for casual viewing. When ads play, my volume setting increases without my permission, and is particularly frustrating when the volume remains elevated after the ads finish. I suspect you cannot prevent ads from increasing the volume, but at least revert the change when the ads are done so I don't have to hear the stream from across the house.

Kinda sad there haven't been any other updates from the looks of the comments below. I was recently deafened by an ad that was 10x louder than the stream at 11 at night. Please have a fix soon or close to one.
