Reduce the greed on Ads
I formulated the title drastically because it‘s a serious problem lately happening on Twitch and don’t see that getting addressed from them, at least not in the level as it should.
I said it several times on social media and i also say it here: Twitch is ruining their ads business, constantly and -seems like- willingly:
- The sheer amount of ads which you face as a viewer of the platform is simply ridiculous
- You‘ve guys taken the control of the ads out of the hands of the content creators
- You implement changes to the ad system without notifying anybody nor testing it out
- the Ads for bits function is not working
So, let me explain that points one by one:
— Amount of Ads —
If i enter a stream (the so called „pre-roll ads“) the player tells me:
- „Ad 1 of 2“, then ofc „Ad 2 of 2“ and then it starts over again, 8 times in a row.
- Which makes by
- - an average ad length of 10 seconds (lowest value in Twitch advantage and easier to calculate here),
- - 20 seconds per „block“
- - which makes it 160 Seconds or over 2,5 Minutes i watch ads.
I really have to ask you Twitch: Are you guys kidding us?
Not is that just annoying, which leads me (and many others i spoke with) to leave the site. Which means the tab will be closed. And your mid-roll ads have the same issue.
— No Control for Content Creators —
Yeah when we are at the mid-roll ads let‘s come to a good point. You guys implement the mid-roll ads without any control for the content creators.
Okay, the streamers can trigger ads to push the mid-rolls out, but that‘s not the control i‘m talking about. It‘s about the content won‘t be interrupted suddenly by an ads in the worse timing, well how could we prevent that? OH by giving the streamers the fully control about the ad placement for example.
You guys know that streamers suffer from your „fantastic test“ right? They loosing viewers which leave the channel because of the mid-roll ads, they try to come back but the ads keep playing and playing and they won‘t come back. Many Streamers i spoke with recommended their viewers to install adblockers to keep them in the channel! If that is not an indicator to you Twitch that something is completely wrong with your ads then i recommend to not be ad based anymore.
— Implementation Failures and Bugs —
We, as Twitch Viewers, are already used to bugs all over the place: Emotes and Badges don‘t load, Whisper Function does often not working.
But the implementation of the mid-roll ads, takes failure to a whole new level! Not that nobody was informed, not partnered streamers, affiliates, normal streamers or viewers. The mid-rolls have also been served to subscribers of channels which is a complete no-go. Obviously nobody tested that before implementing it into production or the test methods are not working at all.
— Ads for Bits Function —
Okay, let‘s leave that all to the side and imagine: We want to watch ads and get something for it, like bits. Welp that‘s also not working.
For months i can‘t use the „ads for bits“ function, at all. Strange when i see that you guys can serve the ads over 2 minutes, but if i want bits to watch ads there are suddenly no ads?!? Why don‘t you use the amazon ads here, why i don‘t see the other ads here? The only time a user would get a literal benefit from watch the ads you block the function? I have to repeat myself: Are you guys kidding me?
I wish Twitch would think more about the user and the content creators and simply not backstabbing on both of them by spamming the user with ads and barely severing and of the revenue to the streamer

The ads have taken over this app! Twitch mobile freezes and pauses often, necessitating a lot of app restarts. Every time I have do this, another ads plays. I swear, I watch a 30 second ad, watch about 10 sec of my streamer before it freezes, and have to start the process all over again. Sometimes I don't even close Twitch, I just open a different app / go to the home screen for a moment, but then another ad plays as soon as I switch back to Twitch mobile.
I wish Twitch could tell that I've already seen an ad in the last 15 minutes or something so it doesn't spam me with nonstop ads just because the app freezes constantly. It's getting borderline unwatchable :(

I got 7 ads in 20 minutes!! I'll just quit Twitch... Dunno how that many ads making (a) viewer(s) quit watching / following streamers is helping streamers.
I am not gonna pay every streamer i follow $5 for not having ads.
I would pay $5 once every month to not have ads. Just saying. You also destroy small streamers as @Stalin stated.
+1 for needing a new platform. -

It's annoying when people are leaving streamers streams because it's physically impossible to watch due to the amount of ads that's being shown. Many mins of ads just for a min or two of being able to watch the stream then back to the ads? That's no fun for anyone...

At this point it's disgusting how money hungry the platform has become. I can guarantee the vast majority of viewers feel the same way... twitch shows more ads than even HULU OR ANY OTHER PLATFORM THAT ACTUALLY BUYS OR CREATES CONTENT. It's abhorrent how twitch thinks showing ads every 5 minutes is a reasonable path to monetization.
Yes, I get the creators can choose to show ads or whatnot. You as the platform, need to step up moderating the ad usage. As a viewer I don't want to 1) watch a unskippable 30 second ad whenever I tune into a new stream 2) watch the same almonds ad 300 times in a row 3) get 5 ads in a row at some random time (how the **** is this a thing - I'm not watching the gd super bowl).
What you're choosing to do is NOT healthy and is incredibly frustrating. Please grow a spine and adjust your policies.

I can't watch anything on Twitch, every 5 minutes I receive AD. Stop these advertisements ... I don't pay Prime for that. I can't see the streamers. Where's the pleasurable experience of watching lives? I see more AD than the streamer. This is worse than YouTube. Especially because Youtube Premium does not have AD

I love twitch and have always thought that despite their shortcomings and inconsistencies, that they will always be the top streaming platform. I used to praise twitch and talk bad about other platforms because I was such a fanboy. But with the amount of ads there are now, I am desperate for a new platform. The adds are too much. I watch a lot with wireless headphones in which automatically pause when I take one out. when I put the headphone back in and unpause I get an ad EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. and when you get ads 5-8 at a time, its just too much. As others have said I also enjoy jumping channels on twitch, but the ad crusade has ruined that experience. I don't expect ads to go away. but there are far too many.

I have missed several battles in PVP because you have 5 minutes of ads. Can you fix the ads so that don't interfere with battles?

Too many ads! Imagine flipping through the channels on a TV to see what's on, except you have to watch a 30 second ad on each channel!

every 10 minutes advertising - well, I end up with streaming support, twich won't see a dollar from me anymore. than watching an ad, you'd rather have that purple disgust and you won't have anything. I would still be willing to watch the ad before the stream, but the ad every 10 minutes is too much.

The amount of ads is definitely killing the vibes of using twitch, been using twitch/jtv since like 2008 and its never been this bad for users. 1 ad per hour is okay-ish but dear god please get rid of the ads that pop up basically every single time you switch a stream, that is the worst thing ever

It is not possible that in 1 hour of streaming I get ads EVERY 15 min. 3 4 or 5 sequences of 30 second ADS!! How am I suppose to enjoy watching stuff on this platform?? This is completely not accetable!
Also, I get bombed by multiple Amazon Prime Ads, and I am a paying Prime member with the account linked to my twitch!! What sense does it make to Advertise something that I already have?!?!?!?!?! -

Please consider the viewer experience in smaller market areas when it comes to advertisement. Ad variety in Finland is absolutely horrible, because I guess Amazon ads are just too expensive or hard to get rolling for companies here. I mean come on, I've *watched* Star Trek Picard on Primevideo. Telling me about it for additional 500 times on top of the 500 I have already been told isn't going to make me watch it again. I wish I was kidding about the numbers but I'm not... I will not even consider reactivating my Primevideo sub until this spam stops. And if I do, which is starting to be a really tiny chance against competing services at this point, I will watch what I want, not what Twitch spams at me the most.

I only have control over my ads when I want more ads than twitch does. Which would be equivalent to old network tv stations where they would fill the overnight hours with infomercials. Six straight hours full of slap chop, flex tape, and magic bullet. If I want to run a commercial break once an hour, which I would find a more reasonable rate, then I can't have that. It's 100% impossible.
Not to mention that anyone who's not an affiliate has zero control at all. Since they can't run ads in the first place.

mistr_sphinx commented
the streamers have enough control over the ads, that there isn't much twitch can do. at this point it is the streamers just trying to earn enough money to have a living.

Don't forget you are part of Amazon and at amazon, customers come first. every time we open any stream even simultaneously it runs an ad

... And honestly your service isn't that special. Ads shouldn't make someone hate a site so much that they went down a rabbit hole to find out exactly how to voice their opinion. I will simply stop using twitch and I don't understand why you think your behaviour as a company is acceptable. Not to mention 90% of content creators use other platforms. I would argue, even, that what you do is a disservice to streamers and content creators. People who support streamers on twitch are being conned into spending more money because of how you administer your advertisements. I'm not going to wait and watch an ad I have no interest or desire for simply to kill a few minutes on my computer or find a possible new interest/streamer. I guess i could spend even more money and subscribe to that channel or get Twitch Prime (this implies that you will be spending more money) or why not even Twitch Turbo. Three different ways to spend my money! Kappa.
