Free inactive usernames after a time period.

We’re reviewing this. Curious how long you think would be ok.

This idea was originally shared back in May 2015... What progress we've made...

The amount of inactive accounts having usernames that multiple channels that actually stream want/need are impeccable. Twitch should either allow us to take their name or remove the inactive account from being on twitch.
Most of them are accounts that are just made to have the username, none of them have any sort of customisation, activity or presence on Twitch.
This should be implemented asap. The fact that this hasn't been fixed/implemented is beyond me.
Please for the love of God Twitch do something about this.

I know there is a current idea.. which is about 7 years old now... please, change the inactive account usernames, allow some of the active Twitch accounts to have their name.

Maybe 7 years? At least it has the same time range as your planned status for this. :)

If you do add this, please release an API for developers so we can see if a username lock has been released.
This system, while I understand the request, would play **** for any banlists.
With the year-long string of attacks and the ever-growing lists of bad accounts as a result, this would become quite the headache. -

I have been watching a certain account for a long time, it is absolutely inactive, then I looked at its creation date and was overthrown, it has not been active since 2007 and just takes the nickname I need. Please do something !!!

If someone hasn't been active in over 1+ years, I as an affiliate should be able to take their their username for my brand. If an account is idle for over 1 year that should be terminated of their username and sent into the pool.

please re-review this post twitch, a lot of people have brands and names that they want to use here, but can't, because it can be linked to a 4+ year inactive account

If this post will ever be re-viewed by Twitch again, its been only 7 years, maybe also consider allowing to transfer usernames that are linked to the same email. There is no point why you shouldn't be able to rename yourself to an account you own. Deleting it and pray for 6 months that it might get available again is just not a good design choice.

At this point it's been 7 years in review without an update, maybe a better approach would be to let people use some additional special characters in their usernames such as '-', '.', '/', '+', etc in addition to the '_' we get now.
Besides that there's so many twitch users at this point it might be worth considering doing what other platforms like Blizzard Battlenet and Discord do and add a 3 or 4 digit discriminator number to every user so even if two individuals choose the same username they can both exist.

I disagree with this statement - usernames that have been banned should remain banned; if that angers you, be angry with the person who got it banned.
Account's that appear inactive may very well be active as a viewer and not a streamer. If you wanted a "original" name like "Potato" or "Wizard" you should have arrived on the scene sooner </3

The username I want to change my account to has not been used for over a year now and it was an account that I owned and closed and I have contacted twitch multiple times in regards to it and i just get sent an automated response of stuff i already know,

Glad to see I'm not the only one suffering from this. I have to use L's around my name because I can't use it without since the account exists but is not active. No followers, no recent content, no about me, nothing at all. I don't like that they haven't said anything about this. It should be like 6 months like support once told me but here we are TWO YEARS LATER, and the results are still the same.

This is hateful you are disrespecting us Affiliates, and Partners, we should get the rights since of sharing exclusive VODs (exclusivity rule) with Twitch, and are restricted for 24 hrs to reupload (reuploading someone who is going live often is really difficult), I mean you are already getting huge splits of revenue by us, then you disrespect even our names in cases if someone of us dies?
Recycle your customers which are non-affiliates, our usernames stay our usernames as so in Steam, and YouTube, just because some ducks disrespect us eagles it does not mean you need to listen to that democracy, instead, respect the moral of respecting the ones who gain you the money with their efforts.
Only recycle non-affiliates after the 1-year rule. -
sMIL0don commented
yea right, creative freedom on twitch? it's been years and they already claimed to have launched the recycling of usernames. It's been so long but I think I read somewhere that if you search and go to the inactive channel that makes it active.... the chance of nobody searching your name on the website you broadcast from for a full year is obviously zero. so these inactive channels remain active if you do, catch 22. fix your sh!t twitch.
