AV1 Encoding Support
AV1 encoding support should be a priority add to the website. AV1 encoding is a big improvement in visual quality to streams over CPU and GPU encoding options. Discord already added it, and I believe YouTube has it as well, it's very surprising to me that Twitch hasn't added this and there isn't even an ETA on it being added yet.

Es increible no poder transmitir con buena calidad con una AMD RX 7800XT por no tener el ehvc 265 o AV1

@Nightcrawla you do not deserve much response, by the fact that you do not understand my comment, and as the 5 of which I put that are the same, VP9 to this day is vs AV1, because google updates it, but I see that you are not informed at all or updated news, that the first thing, second, I do not read closed minds or respond to them, so feel flattered that at least I have spent a little time returning to a ticket that is practically forgotten, because people who need and ask for AV1 in 2023 does not matter and leave them aside where I include myself because now I use AMD, I know how the market works, technology and companies, I know why they do not put the AV1, and I repeat, excuses.

Always fun to see what kind of garbage washes up in these forums. Were it not for these places, where would all those folks who are fun at parties congregate when they're not out being fun at parties?
We (small streamers) want AV1. We are here to upvote! I have purchased an Intel ARC card specifically for this purpose and will be using it for livestreaming to YouTube. Whatever the hurdles are, Twitch should be paying attention to that aspect (YT/Discord supporting AV1, Twitch not supporting) of the AV1 issue.
Hence this poll.
The rest of you, stay classy. :D

Precisamos que o Codec AV1 seja real na plataforma, pois é um verdadeiro retrocesso diante das concorrentes não possuir!

With Intel Arc being a thing and actually becoming good, plus AMD / ATI GPUs not having any other encoder well supported in OBS, AV1 encoding would be a real game changer a lot of streamers would appreciate.

AV1 would make AMD GPUs viable. We need this!

Nobody gives a fudge why or why not or how and how not to do it. Stop discussing this as if you have or had any form of influence whatsoever. This is not a discussion board. This is to show an interest if there was a BETA for its functionality on twitch.

I’m not insulting anyone if being told you don’t understand how things work when you clearly do not is insulting to you then that is on you.
I’m not against them adding AV1 I voted in support of it, they should add it to be competitive in the industry. But the people raving about the savings twitch will experience are just incredibly unaware of how codecs work, majority of people think it’s as simple as enabling it, it’s going to be millions of dollars in server infrastructure upgrades which wasn’t even feasible at scale until the release of the MA35D accelerator, then adding at least 50% in cost to deliver having to provide transcoding for every single AV1 stream to vp9. Making a ROI or even a break even point so far out that it’s not even something twitch would consider, maybe if amazons IVS has another more lucrative reason besides twitch to being the upgrade they will but twitch alone will not make that call.
If it gets added it’s almost guaranteed going to be limited to partners as a way to limit the overhead of transcoding, they’re not going to spend millions to double delivery data for 1-5 viewer streams.

@ChasePK , again so what. Why are you raging against the idea of Twitch supporting something they will have to anyway?
If they don't support AV1, then more streamers will just move to Youtube because youtube can say "better quality, less expensive, less latency", even if that's only true for those who have AV1 hardware.
Now calm down and stop insulting people.

You again aren’t understanding. It will not save them money on data. There’s literally a real world example of this right now you can go look at.
YouTube allows AV1 streaming. Go pull up an AV1 stream. The person may be streaming 1440p at 6k bitrate. But YouTube has to transcode that stream to a more common codec like vp9 and doing that they also double the bitrate the maintain the quality. Please educate yourself before ranting about things you do not understand.

@ChasePK So what. It's not like Twitch is going to be like "oh you can only stream at h264 because some poor guy in Korea didn't want to replace their 15 year old first-generation smartTV. Did you know your web browser can do AV1 in software even on hardware released in 2014?
Quite frankly it's a shame that Twitch neither supports HDR, 4K or H265, but seeing as no streaming software did either, it wasn't something to lose sleep over. But AV1 can literately increase the quality or reduce the bitrate necessary to maintain the same quality. It's quite literately in Twitch's best interests, particularly in Asia to do this, because that's where they are paying the highest rates for data.

@kisaiTensbi “it leaves smart TVs as the last holdout” you genuinely can’t think that every single person has bought the latest and greatest devices and are able to natively decode. Not every single viewer is out here shelling out thousands of dollars for latest gen CPUs/GPUs or cell phones. Look at steam hardware surveys a large chunk of people still rock 10 series gpus.
We are many years away until AV1 will be a commonly capable codec to decode. You need to step outside of your bubble for a second and get some perspective lol. Yeah we all want AV1 but the reality like MANY others have stated is the only way it’ll come to the platform is twitch will have to transcode EVERY stream to more streamlined codec for the average user to be able to watch.

KisaiTenshi commented
Please support AV1. M3 Mac and A17 Pro (iPhone 15 Pro)'s now support decoding AV1. So this just leaves smartTV's as the last hold out. If you have a 11th gen Intel CPU, Nvidia 30-series, or AMD 6000 series, you have hardware AV1 decoding already. If you have a AMD 7000, Nvidia 40-series you also have an AV1 encoder. Pretty much if you bought your SmartTV or Smartphone device since 2021, it likely has the ability to decode AV1 in hardware.
It is a chicken-and-egg problem however, as hardware manufacturers have all supported h.265 for quite a while, and even Youtube has supported h265 for uploads for quite some time, it's just streaming it didn't. Twitch could get the jump on Youtube here if they roll out AV1 ingress first. Discord already supports AV1 streaming.

@SpartanDraco your post was honestly very very very closed minded, which is ironic given that you're tired of such people. It's obvious you picked apart my post to create yours. It's also obvious you didnt even try to properly read what I've posted or even understand what I was at all saying. Let me clarify some of your statements for you.
"VP9 by the way is the equivalent of AV1 youtube"
-VP9 is the competitor/equivalent to H.265(HEVC) not AV1."that's why they don't use AV1 first because they have google and its VP9"
-VP9 was created by Google to have the quality and efficiency of H.265 without the licensing fees of H.265 and I hope you know that Google is part of the Multi-Organization collaboration developing AV1 to again keep the codec open source and free of licensing and to be the next codec to take over h.264, because its painfully obvious you didn't know, so you're welcome."my mobile plays native AV1, my old 2012 mobile does it by software"
-Just because YOUR shiny new phone can decode AV1 natively doesn't mean that the majority of people suddenly can do what you can. Sites like Twitch, Youtube, Kick, Facebook etc have to make sure that EVERYONE possible can view their videos seamlessly without the use of third party software and this includes having support for all devices new and a few years older. In order to do this effectively these sites need to be able, for now, transcode streams. Transcoding takes time, money and hardware, to which the CEO of Twitch has already stated they currently don't have the capacity to do that for everyone due to the servers being a few years old already and the amount of time it takes to transcode an AV1 ingest is much higher and more expensive than H.264. News Flash, the majority of earth's population doesn't have the newest and greatest available at their disposal. And Twitch/YT/Kick/FB etc have to cater to the majority, hence the reason its taking Twitch so long to implement. Even @S_Class_DaNewb did the work for you and posted below what video has the CEO talking about it and a timestamp! Yet you couldn't take the time to inform yourself before posting.Twitch is nowhere near the size of Youtube and also uses a different protocol, so naturally it's taking them longer. Is it unfortunate? Sure is, the key here is that we all (including myself) have to be patient for this to roll out. My post was more for the people **** posting Twitch for not having AV1 RIGHT NOW and how "cost saving it is" It isn't cost saving right now for the sites because they need to buy the hardware to save the money later and pass it along to the end user. Look I think we can all agree Twitch has done some very questionable things even recently, but people shouldn't be impatiently **** posting Twitch about not having AV1 right now just because youtube gave the streamer the ability to do it already. I think what's happening is that this thread is already so old and we still have yet to see any Twitch Staff even comment on it, that the people **** posting are aggravated for the no communication. Which is very understandable, I mean didn't Twitch say themselves that they created this "User Voice Forums" to better communicate with the community, and they clearly have ignored this thread as a whole.
AGAIN: Even though Youtube has implemented the ability for a streamer to stream in AV1, youtube still transcodes the livestream to an older codec (VP9 or even worse AVC for 1080p and under). While thats great for us the streamer who's able to stream AV1 and can run a high quality stream at a lower bitrate on our end (That's our bandwidth/cost savings for the streamer only) you still fail to realize you yourself had to spend money to save money,(You bought a 1000 dollar graphic card in order to stream AV1) it doesn't negate the fact the people who are watching the transcoded stream, are not seeing an AV1 6mbps stream natively, they are watching your 6mbps AV1 stream transcoded to VP9 at more than double the bitrate. So there right now is no cost savings yet for the end user/viewer at this moment in time.

I would like to be able to use AV1 so I can stream with a lower bitrate. My upload bandwidth is constrained so being able to cut the bitrate in half and maintaining the same quality would be a huge boon.
