Ability to turn off chat reply/threads feature
The chat replies feature may be cool for some specific reasons, but most of the time is not helpful. The thread it creates is also hard to see compared to normal chat messages. It would be nice to be able to toggle this feature on or off. Similar to how you can turn off nigh mode
We have heard the feedback in this idea & its comments and reworked chat replies to reduce noise. By allowing users to reply directly to a specific message in a thread, only the user being responded to will be @'ed, rather than the user whose comment initiated the thread. Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback.

I have received the update for On-Hover reply buttons and I would still very much like a way to disable the functionality entirely. When I'm scrolling up while modding, the reply icons popping up slow down the scroll and visibly lag the page. A reply is something I'm never going to use in a chat room, so the feature existing for me is a waste of time anyway.
As it is, I've used a userscript to inject CSS to override the reply button with display:none and I've worked around the issue with it popping up, but the lag is still there as it decides to show the button each time (even though it's invisible).
Please give us a way to disable the feature on the client-side.

It messes up on-hover browser extensions like Yomichan. I would like it removed.

Please give us option to personalize it - on/off. My chat is unreadable for me bacuse of this "improvement"...

Please remove this new feature it is very distracting. I can reply to people easily with @ and tab. I don't need to see everyone's thread of replies to each other as a streamer. I have the ability to check logs in the channel.

Chat replies is a waste of developer time. Its cumbersome, not necessary and not needed in 99.9% of use cases. Revert the changes, fire whoever decided this needed to be a thing and redirect developer effort into fixing problems with Twitch and not wasting time on unnecessary features.

I dislike the new reply feature, it makes text non-selectable meaning it's completely broken cut and paste for things like raid messages.

This new reply feature just gets in the way for me, its like one gigantic button that i cannot turn off. I use my right monitor to watch twitch on and sometimes instead of alt tabbing to that browser ill just click to it. Now if i do that ill just open a random reply with someone.

Replies break accessibility plugins because the text is no longer selectable. Browser plugins that might give definitions for words or read them out to users are completely broken because the text cannot be selected anymore.

Me with replies experiment: tries to copy raid message, ready to go, chat raids new stream, pastes garbled raid text, confusion. Spends 30 seconds fixing formatting or recreating raid message. Realizes raid is over. xP
Also me:
Tries to reply to own chat message with a Kappa. No reply option.
In fast moving chat, chases the message to reply and miss-clicks.
Maybe this is for VODs? No reply options in VODs.
Looks for the Turn-Off option... <shrug> -

As it is right now, this feature for me is not good. The replies are annoying and take up space. The arrows to the left of EVERY non-mod message just look terrible.
This feature is bad, as you can just @ a user. Just makes the chatting experience less enjoyable.
There should always be a toggle for stuff like this. Literally nobody will appreciate it if something blocks their vision and they can't do anything about it.

without ping highlighting the messages, the thread seems pointless in a well-populated chat. in a fast moving stream, people are just going to ping each other with @ to reply, not use the thread feature.
not being able to quickly copy-paste messages - for example, raid response messages - is a real downside to this new feature as well.

Don't get me wrong, the idea is good and the feature can be super useful, but the current implementation is horrendous to say it in a nice way.
@SirStendec has done a better job with his custom FrankerFaceZ UI in less than a day:
Example 1: https://imgur.com/IirBJMl
Example 2: https://imgur.com/QOHGh0wJust do it his way and everybody will be happy.
His barely changes the look of chat and is not intrusive at all while keeping all features. Then just add a toggle for the reply icon in chat settings and this new feature is perfectly fine.

I agree with this would be kinda cool option to have this turned off. It is a bad idea does work in forums. But twitch is not a forum it is a live platform.

I really like this idea, though I can see how it easily becomes confusing and hard to moderate. Adding an option to disable it entirely and an option to keep it enabled but limit it to moderators / streamer only would be really useful.
I posted another suggestion for adding a limit toggle for just moderators / streamers to be able to use it over here: https://twitch.uservoice.com/forums/310201-chat-messaging/suggestions/41129671-ability-to-make-replies-only-by-the-streamer-mod

would be nice if the streamers can decide if they wanna use it. aka opt in to use threads.

This makes moderation way more difficult, if you turn it off you will not know who people are talking to and when on it just clutters the chat, tagging someone if more than enough to be able to communicate.

Other possibility I'd like to see, would be being able to turn it off for my channel. If a single person in the chat turns it off he/she might be confused by what other people are refering to, because they don't have to make it clear, because of the thread-thingy.

Please at least give us the option to turn it off, its a complete mess to moderate and it clutters the entire chat
